AUSTRIAN EXPLAINS SLEEP'S MYSTERIES One in Slumber Really Is Three or Four Persons, Scientist Says. When a mind fixed on waking at a certain time the next morning, that often is ex-ct]y what happens—and without any need of an alarm clock. ‘This is one of the mysteries of sleep elucidated by Dr. Otto Kauders, noted Austrian psychiatrist, now on his way to Washington as official delegate to the first International Congress of Mental Hygiene, May 5 to 10. ‘When' sleep comes, Dr. Kauders says, the sleeper really changes from one per- son {o three or four persons—each oc- :u&yin: the same body. There is the ing ego, the dream ego and the sleep 2go. The latter is unconscious. The second is semi-conscious with & sort of uncontrolled contact with the outside world, that results in weird images, lovely dreams and horrible nightmares. ‘The first, like & sentry in a slumber- ing camp, stays awake and keeps watch. It challenges all stimuli coming to the brain and if any of them look suspi- clous, it warns the dreamer and wakes the sleeper, whereupon all three become one person again, ready to fight or run. For that matter, according to Dr. Kau- ders, there may be several sentries, each split off from the whole consclousness, person_goes to bed with the [ who mmfltwdtheenmdflu‘ll- position to sleep and e of groups of merve u.sintbebnm weordlnlwthllc- count, which recently has been trans- lated at St. Elizabeth's Hospital, al- mough nut necessarily discreetly ar- anged groups. The discovery was a direct result of work with eneephulm or sleeping nicknul sentry characterized as “a little corner of '.h! soul that knows we are sleeping and dreaming.” Dreams to Be Considered. ‘The nature of lleep and the mean- ing of dreams will be discussed, it is expecud, from various viewpoints at congress meetings—especially by he delegation of Vienna psychiatrists, V] find in fantastic dream experi- ences the explanation of queer quirks in human behavior. Others will ad- vance the argument that dreams are only uncontrolled memory images of events during the waking hours and that sleep itself has vnlyrfirhynoloflul function Lo restore the ti body. Such strarge phenomena as sleep walking. crimes committed by sleeping persons and dreams which come true will be de- scribed. Another theory expected to be ad- vanced is that sleep is only incidentally a device for eliminating toxins from the blood stream and primarily is an escape_from the worries or monotony of waking life—a sort of temporary sulcide. Advocates of this theory polnt. out that Persom often sleep soundly when their worries are greatest, as criminals on the eve of execution. White Men Required. COLUMBIA, 8. Which stand guard. Whole Mind too Busy. Before splitting up for the night, ac- cording to the analysis of Kauders and his co-worker, Dr. Paul Schilder, the whole personality, acting as a camp commander, gives the sentries their spe- clal orders, usually very few and simple. Such would be the order to wake the others at a certain time. The sentry has nothing to do but keep track of time and does so very effectivelv. where- as the whole waking mind, with thou- sands of other things to think about, must rely on watch dials or the position of the sun. ‘There also are general standing orders depending on the needs of the brain community. Thus a mother “ego” may instruct the sentries to wake her only when the baby cries. She will sleep on through all sorts of noise in the room, but be awakened instantly by the slightest sound from the in- fant. Besides there are general orders for all sentries to sound the alarm when anything appears to threaten the se- curity of the organism, so that person may awake with a start when there is & robber or a faint odor of smoke from & burning house in the bed chamber Studied Hypnotic Subjects ‘This apparently fantastic theory was worked out by Kauders and Schilder in experiments with hypnotized persons in which they studied the progress of hypnotic sleep, which they believe fol- Jows the same rules as real sleep. They !ollowed the recent discovery by Dr. nstantin von Economo of Vienna of a uny group of nerve cells in the third ventricle of the brain which act as a sleep center. Sleep ordinarily is caused by toxins accumulating in the body from the work of the day and is nec- essary for the elimination of these toxins.
