LINDBERGH PLANS POWERED CIDER Noted Pilot Is Expected to Seek World’s Record With Craft. @pecial Dispatch to The Star. NEW YORK, April 25.—Col. Charles | A. Lindbergh, who has been studying| the principles of fight and has made | several attempts to_better the duration | record of Hawley Bowlus, who taught him to glide, plans to take-up the study ;( power gliding, it has been learned ere, A glider engine weighing 26 pounds and developing 10 horsepower has been shipped to Col. Lindbergh for installa- tion in his Bowlus Albatross sailplane at San Diego, and it is expected that the famous airman will attempt to establish & new world record in the craft by using the tiny engine to carry him from hill to hill so that he can find winds which will carry him upward. It was learned from sources close to Col. Lindbergh that he intends mount- 1ng the little engine on the leading edge of the wing directly above the cockpit | of the sallplane, with an extended shaft | running to the tralling edge of the | craft. A small pusher propeller will be | pointed on the shaft, which will supply | enough of a blast to keep the craft aloft in still air. The experimental work will be car- ried out in the glider camp of Mr. Bowlus near San Diego, it was learned. Mr. Bowlus, who exhibited one of his sailplanes at the All-American Aircraft | Show at Detroit last week, in admitting | that he, too, was studying the possi- | bilities of power gliding, stated that Americans are not yet ready for motor gliding. “We will have nothing but confusion if we go into power gliding before the youth have learned all about gliding without an engine,” he stated. “We must first teach them to glide, and | then the next step will be in the direc- | tion of motored flying.” Col. Lindbergh shortly after his first experience with a glider said: “I know of no_ easier way to learn the princi- ples of flight than gliding.” He believes that the glider offers a safe, inexpen- sive way for amateurs, both youths and adults, to learn to fly, and believes that gliders of today will be the fiyers of tomorrow. Col. Lindbergh was badly bitten by the “glider bug” when he visited Mr. Bowlus in the West, and although he had intended taking only a flight or so in the sailplane, he established a glider campaign and remained in the hilly country for weeks. Col. Lindbergh on | his first glider flight remained aloft | slightly more than 30 minutes. Mrs. Lindbergh while at the camp became quite proficient in the art of gliding, and she probably will make flights in the motored sailplane after it has been assembled and tested by ' her fiyer husband. She said she was willing to meet her mother and talk with her and spent hours with her at the hotel where Mrs. Bethell was staying, but the lure of British society—even royal associations—held out to Marjorie failed to appeal to her. ‘The mother states she will disinherit the girl unless she returns to her.
