The higher salaries are not reached until a pllot has 3,000 or more hours of fiying to his credit. The big air transport companies have as their first pilots only the men who have had the widest and longest experi- ence. Assistant pilots are expected to have more than 250 hours of fying time. to thelr credit. If you find you get through a ground school in a satisfactory manner, and that you are adapted by temperament to flying, you will not have long to wait for a job. But if you do qualify, take the first job that offers. There is no need of wasting time waiting for a better op- portunity. The sooner you get started on your career the greater your chances of success. Good pilots can come up from the ranks, so to speak. If you lack certain advantages, but have marked ability, you can start as a “greased monkey,” as alrport helpers are known. The pay is not likely to exceed $20 a week, but you can keep your eyes open, and if you learn readily and are adaptable you will ultimately become a licensed me- chanic at some $45 a week. You can rise from that place to a position as pilot if you have the right stuff in you. You will find good opportunities in the passenger and field departments of the big aviation companies. As we be- come more and more air-minded, there will be a demand for men who can qualify as executives on the ground.
