News of the World By Associated Press ESTABLISHED 1870 NEW BRITAIN HERALD 16 SAILORS MISSING AFTER SHIP BURNS AND RONS ASHORE 10 Members of Boat's Crew, Tncluding Captain, Landed Salely—Hulk Still on Fire OTHER CRAFT SEARCHING SOUND FOR SUR\HYORS Lifeboat Upsets Just After I‘unch<‘ ing—One of Men Insists Nearby | Steamers Refused to Play Search- lights on Water in Effort to Lo- cate Drowning Sailors—Names of Dead Men Not Obtained. Stamford, April 25 (P—Sixteen members of the crew of the Long Island sound freighter Thames, ply-| ing from New York to Bridgeport, burned last night off Sound Beach, were missing this noon and 10 had been saved. Nine of the 10 rescued were taken | to Providence by the steamer Lex-| ington and one picked up by an oyster schooner rejoined his family in Bridgeport at last midnight. The | hulk of the craft, blackened by fire, was on a reef 700 yards off Tod,s\ Point on the Sound Beach shore. | Craft Still Burning At noon today the craft was still burning and coast guardsmen and | others were unable to get close to it. Al so0n as it is possible men will | zo aboard and endeavor to learn if there were men in the pilot house | when the steamer hit the reef.| Among the missing men is Pilot | TLeonard Hancourt of Seavie avenue, Bridgeport. Up till noon members of his family had had no word from him. | The Thames left New York for | Bridgeport at ¢ o'clock last night| and fire broke out when it was l’\e the sound off this shore. Captain Shgrman, who is at Prov- | idence, was of the opinion that the| fire caught near or room. The shipping list of the crew was suppased to have been made up in New York as the crew signed there for the round trip, but inquiry at the | New York oftice of the Thames| River Line company of Bridgeport, brought an answer that the crew list | was not available there. Seek Missing Men | The list was not at Bridgeport. Seven coast guard craft from Staten Jsland and New Tondon were| searching the sound between N.\m-‘ ford. Bridgeport and Port Jefferson, Tong Island, this afternoon for signs | of the missing men. | Although the water's for | miles was searched this morning | and a coast guard patrol boat «‘rmn‘ ed about the sound, no trace of the missing men was found. The fire swept the v el from which also there were severa®small | explosions during the night, wl‘ there seems little possibility of sal-| vage of cargo and equipment. It seemed evident that the bl ing steamer was steered from mic scund by hand, which would a count for its having been driven on | the reef. Mr, and Mrs. Aren Lar-| en, both of whom were among the | first to sight the ‘Thames afir from their home, said today they| watched the craft throug as it came ashore. . Stecred Onto Reef Both felt surc that some one was at the wheel, as after it was headeil in, with the stern wreathed in flames, its course did not deviate to any noticeable degree. It cam-> in almost a straight line {o the reef. | It seemed to them, the said, that| whoever was at the-helm was de- termined to beach the craft. Firemen and others who were sent out to the craft ~during the night found the heat from the| steamer so intense they could not =et within several hundred feet of it. in the boiler| cdge Nine Land in Providence Providence, April 25 (#) — The i captain and eight other members or ((,nmm\wd on Page '1'“0) HARTFORD 70 ACCEPT | SOLATION PATIENTS, ew Britain Cases Be Accommodated in Capital City to | Officials of the Hartford board of | health today advised Acting Mayor Pavid L.
