MOVIES AND MOVIE PEOPLE BY MOLLIE MERRICK. HOLLYWOOD, April 4 (NANA).— The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences made its yearly awards last night, and gave the colony a fertile fleld for argument for weeks to come. In reading the list, remember the prizes are being given for the year ended July 31, 1929. Our best talkies have been made subsequent to that date. ‘These awards are bestowed on the first and now somewhat archaic talking pic- ture efforts of Hollywood. Warner Baxter receives the actor's award for his performance in “In Old AriZona.” Mary Pickford recelves the woman's prize in recognition of her rendition of the leading role in “Coquette.” Frank Lloyd captures directing lau- rels for his megapl.oning of “The Divine Lady.” a picture which starred Corinne Griffith at the outset of talking vogue. To Cedric Gibbons goes the art di- rector's award for his sets of “The Bridge of San Luis Rey.” Clyde de Vina, cinematographer, cap- tured the camera prize for his work in “White Shadows in the South Seas.” This picture, informed with sound ef- fects, was the outstanding eye picture of the year. Hans Kraly, writer, wins the award | +in his group for his work in “The Patriot.” was a silent picture. Revivals go merrily on. “Naughty Marietta” will be one of the season’s uctions. To give you some faint des of what studio demands may be, they are looking for a girl with a mag- nificent soprano voice. It’s rather |« cult music. If you remember, Emma | Trentini made a sensation of it in the shadowy past. But they are looking for the above- mentioned soprano, other qualifications being she must be 5 feet 2 and weigh 98 pounds. The biggest problem facing these singing girls of the village is how to groduce gorgeous tone while thor- oughly vitiated by diet and heavy massage. It is the in-between season in Holly- wood—in-between the scorching sun of the occasional Spring day and the sharp winds of the retreating Winter.
