FINANCIAL, CURB SHARES RISE | JIMACTIVE MARKET 0ils, Natural Gas, Utility and | Wi ssows ta Other Groups Share in Advance. BY JOHN A. CRONE. Special Dispatch to The Star. NEW YORK, March 18.—Petroleum, natural gas, utility, industrial and trad- ing corporation shares today were whirled to new peaks in one of the most active curb sessions this year. More than a score of oils, ranging from some of the lowest priced to high- grade investment issues, climbed to record levels for the year or longer. This list included Gulf Oil of Pennsyl- vania, Humble Ofl, International Petro- leum, Creole Petroleum and Continental Ofl of Maine. United Gas and Arkansas Natural led the natural gas list in point of ac- tivity, both reaching new maximum quotations on their first sales. Dixie Gas and Utllities, Lone Star Gas and Memphis Gas also attained their best prices of the year during this move- ment, which was predicated on mergers and increased earnings. Although utilities were rather slow in moving upward, they climbed fairly steadily after starting. Arizona Power, which hit a new top, was followed up- ward by American Superpower, United Light & Power A, American Light & Traction and American Gas & Electric. American Cyanamid was the first ac- tive industrial to shatter its previous high mark for the year, with a 3-poinu gain. On the other hand, 1. Miller & Sons fell 3 points to a new low for the ear. i Aluminum, Ltd., at 17012 also opened at a record hlxh Ford Motors of France and Ford Motors, Ltd., featured prenoon motor dealings by a similar attainment of new high levels. Avia- tion Corporation of America, perform- ing a similar feat, was prominent in the air shares. ROXY THEATER WEEK NETS LARGE RETURNS Gross receipts of the Roxy Theater in New York covering the seven-day period ended March 13, the third anni- versary of the theater and known as “Roxy week,” totaled $104,861, it was officially announced today. The Roxy, ‘which is the largest motion picture the- ater in the world, is controlled by the Fox Theaters Corporation, one of the William Fox enterprises. This total compares with average weekly gross re- ceipts of $107,302 for 1929, when total receipts for the year aggregated $5,579,751. i e B CHICAGO LIVE STOCK MARKET CE.!CAGO March 18 () (United States Department of Agriculture).— Hogs—Receipts, 13,000 head, including 1,500 direct; market uneven, mostly strong to 10 cents higher than yester- day's -average; top, 10.75; bulk, good to choice, 160-240 pounds, 10.00210.65: 300-pound butchers down to 9.50; butch- ers, medium to choice, 250-300 pounds, 15a10.00; 200-250 pounda 9.65210.75; 60-200 pounds, 9.90a10.75; lwa]l’gg pounds, 9.65a10.75; pck!n( SOWS, 9.10; pigs, medium to choice, 90-130 pounds, 9.00a10.25. Special Dispatch to The Sta: BOSTON, March 18.—The United Business Service of Boston believes that there is a visible tendency toward dis- because February , and March reports are failing to_continue the gains made in January. This feel- ing is justified only to the extent that hopes were raised too high in January. ““The continued decline in commodity prices is indeed very discouraging, and substantial headway cannot be made till it stops. Against this depressive in- fluence, however, we have the subsan- tial lowering of money rates here and abroad, and a slow but real increase in the amount of money available for loans,” the review says. “As compared with last year, there is likely to be an increase in public works, railroad and utility construction; but with rents tending down, there is little inducement for the private builder w long as mortgage money is difficult get, and organized labor persists In holdlng to prosperity wage rates. “The current depression therefore cannot be regarded as just a passing cloud that will pass away quickly. Slowly, however, improving conditions in the fleld of money and credit will check the world-wide fall in commodity prices, and later in the year will again favor construction and new enterprise. “Spring business, will probably show less than the usual seasonal upturn. The security markets, however, are in a position to benefit most and Tflflfl‘ by the easing in money, and will therefore lead the way to improvement.” Nearly $30,000,000 worth of Mquid eggs were sent from China to England ll;sk: yfur to be used by cake and cracker eries.
