In .the volume, “Radio and Its Future,” which Harper Bros. publish this Bpflnz and which this correspond- ent had the privilege of editing, Mr. Horn makes this statement: “Probably future expeditions to the remote parts of the world will have equipment sufficiently powerful to trans- mit the human voice back to civilization ‘where it will be connected with the great broadcasting networks, and the public will get first hand and direct , information and descriptions from the sturdy men who visit the remote places of the earth.” Dot .and dash radio communication kept the Byrd expedition in constant touch with civilization and his men had receiving sets which were able also to tune in voice and music broadcast from various countries on short waves. Little America, however, did not have a voice transmitter, and Admiral Byrd's voice was heard over the radio Tuesday morn- ;lng“ for the first time in a year and & alf. It came through with considerable distortion, yet it was recognizable, as it was relayed from Dunedin, New Zealand, the Byrd expedition's first stop over on its way back to the United States. The distortion was not due to the 10,000~ mile short-wave relay that carried Byrd's voice to Schenectady and thence over the national network. It was caused by local static conditions pre- || valling between Wellington, New Zea- land, and Sidney, Australia.
