Enpleden, formerly governor of Southmoor prison, is murdered, An in- vestipation by a nephew, Sefton Engleden, and his law clerk, Johnson, reveals that during the colonel’s time at Southmoor .two prisoners, Snelling and Hardle, escaped. The theory is that the colonel had found the men and that they killea him. A former warder, Millwaters, who was engaged to help in the investigation, is also murdered. Cabt. Shovenam of Southmoor gives a description of the #ecaped convicts. Snelling had @ birth- mark on his right wrist. Young Engle- den recalls that Sanderson, on whose estate the colonel's body 1was found, wears @ broad bracelet om his right wrist. The question arises, Is Snelling Sanderson? Johnsom thinks he is cnd that Hewitt, his butler, is Hardle. When an attempt is made to verify this belief it 4s Jound that both men are missing. John Oates. Sanderson’s chaufleur, tells of taking his master and a man wn- known to him on a mysterious drive the night of the murder. A townsman, Francis Stlverstein, tells Johmson that Sanderson, with Sadler, the town jeweler, and several others, was perpetrating a financial swindle. and sugoests that the colonel was murdered because he threat- ened to expose the fraud. He is also convinced that a farmer named Beckett, who had known Sanderson very well, is one of the fjormer prison warders through whose trenchery the two convicts escaped. Capt. Shoreham sees the man and identifies him as Settle, the ez- warder. Johnson sets out for Starrick Priory, Settle’s farm. He waits there until dark and then sees the shadows of two men on a window shade. TWENTY-SECOND INSTALLMENT. OHNSON'S story coninued: “It gave me something of a surprise to see those two shad- ows, because, up to that mo- ment, I had felt convinced that the house was empty—empty, at any rate, up to the time at which Settle re-entered it from his marketing ex- pedition. And Settle had certainly not brought anybody with him! I had a full view of him as he drove up, and he was alon But there the shadows were—shadows of two men, both big, tall fellows, moving about. Shadows of two men!—and as I watched the shadows became three. “So’ there were three men in that place!l—and two of them must have been_there all the time I had been watching the house from the edge of the ravine. Had they seen me? I thought not—I had exercised caution as soon as I had come in sight of the farmstead and its surroundings. Who were they?—that was another matter. Probably Sanderson and Hew- itt. If I fell into their hane I should doubtlm‘ share the fate of Col. Engieden and of Millwaters, and get a bullet through me or a knock on the head and a grave in ohe of the crevices of the moor. All the same, I was going to know to whom those three shadows belonged. R “It was how dark, as dark as ever| it would be that night, but the dark- | ness was mnot going to Jast long. During my perfod of waiting in the hotel at Harlington, I had ascertained that the moon rose that night about half past 10 o'clock. It was not 10 minutes past; the moon would very soon show its face above the ridge be- hind me. And it was just then at the full and in that clear atmosphere its light would be quite sufficient to make moving objects easily recognizable. Now, for anything I knew to the con- trary, there might be a fourth man in this party, and he might even then be watching me from one of the front windows. And the space before the house was a clear one, with no corner— if I crossed it, anybody with sharp eyes, keeping guard from the house, would see me at once. Still, the thing had got to be done—I had got to know who the men were, and what they were after. “The bank of the narrow stream on which I was standing was thickly fringed with alders; under their pro- tecting shade I crept further away to my right, and then, to my great satis- faction, saw that there was a side win- dow to the room in which the shadows were moving. And by the way light streamed through it on a fringe of trees and brushes outside I judged that the window was uncurtained. If I could worm my way round the out- buildings and get to where I could see in at that window * * * “I had to gv a long way round, keep- ing @rst in the cover of the alders, then behind a hedge that shut off an orchard from the farmstead, then behind a long black wall that lay in shade, and finally through a succession of sheds, stables and the like. But at last I was close to the northwest angle of the house, and from a black nook in the deep shadow of the old tower I was able to see the side window. And as I had previously concluded it had neither blind nor curtain. “The problem now was how to ap- proach it. I solved that by dropping on hands and knees in the grass and advancing, always in the shadows, in that highly uncomfortable fashion until I had reached the wall of the house. Thence I transferred myself to the belt of bushes which faced the window. The cover was thick there, and, when I stood up and looked cautiously through a screen of laurel, I found that I eould see right into the room in which I had watched their shadows cross and re- cross: 1 was, indeed, so advantageousl placed that I could see pretty well all over it. And now there was but one man in it, and he was the last man in the world I hac. expected to see at that moment. “Sadler! There were more reasons than one for the surprise I felt at see- ing Sadler in that place. that time I knew Sadler well enough sight. I had seen him two or three times on the magistrates’ bench, and oftener about the town at Barowsburgh; twice I had some conversation with him on the subject of Col. Engleden’s disappear- ance—a toplc on which he was inclined to be self-condemnatory and almost lachrymose, it being his conviction that, if he had.'t advised Col. Engleden to cae Wraisby Abbey by moonlight, that gallant gentleman would not have met his sad fate. But wherever I had seen Sadler, on the bench, in his jaweler's shop, or in street or market place he RESORTS.
