PAIRFAX, Va, March 11—The State Legislature last week passed thé bill introduced by Delegate L. L. Prée- | man, known as an amendment to the | Hanes bill passed two years ago, providing for additional assistance for | Sheriff E. P. Kirby. The bill as amended in the Senate | following a conference between Senator STAR, WASHINGTON, of supervisors; Mark Turner, supervi- sor from Dranesville; Harry Leigh, st pervisor from Providence district County Engineer P. N. Larkin and Commissioner of Revenue J. W. Kinch- eloe, is radically different from the bill first passed by the House. This called for a transfer to the sheriff’s office of the traffic officers of the county, who are at present appointed by the court, paid on a salary, not a fee basis, by the supervisors and are under the im- mediate supervision of the highway en- eer. Opposed in County. Notice of this bill, first given through the columns of The Star, aroused in- stant opposition from the governing bodies of the county, who had defeated a similar measure when introduced two years ago by former Delegate H. E. Hanes. The supervisors took immedi- ate and unanimous action, by resolu- tion, long-distance phone calls, and finally by personal interviews, to make it piain to the legislators that such action would not meet their approval. They took the position that the traffic police were appointed to patrol the county roads, that they could not per- D. Terms of Compromise. ‘The compromise agreement worked |out last week in the last minute rush before adjournment leaves the traffic officers as before, responsible to the supervisors, but allows the latter board |to appropriate funds, not to exceed $1,200 per year with which to provide Sheriff Kirby with a second full-time deputy, upon presentation to the board of a certificate in writing that such as- | Sistance is necessary for the proper con- duct of the county’s business. Until two years ago, the sheriff was the only ‘member of the police force paid a basic salary, the deputies being compensated only by fees. The growth of the crim- inal work of the county, due largely to the difficulties of enforcing the prohi- bition laws, has according to Sheriff | Kirby so greatly increased the volume of work in his office that he needs at least two full-time assistants beside the de- | puties who will continue to serve on the old basis. By the Associated Press, A delegation of House members left Washington last night for Winsted, Conn,, to attend the funeral of the late Representative James P. Glynn. Twenty-four House and six Senate members originally were named on the committee to attend services of the Con- necticut Representative, who died last week, but this number was considerably reduced because of the deaths Saturday of Willlam Howard Taft and Justice Edward T. Sanford and resultant inter- ruption of plans throughout the ital. ‘The Representatives, arriving at Win- sted at 6:25 o'clock this morning, will return to Washington tonight.
