Between D and E Seventh Street W. H. ZUMBRUNN DIES IN CALIFORNIA Noted Attorney, Who Headed Ku Klux Klan Legal Staff, Is Victim of Cancer. The colorful career of Willlam H. Zumbrunn, who came to Washington to defend two Senators whose elections were contested, and stayed to head the legal staff of the Ku Kiux Klan, ended in his death yesterday at his home, in Beverly Hills,” Calif. Zumbrunn was a victim of cancer. He was operated on about a month ago, and within the last three wecks had taken the treatment originated by Dr. Walter B. Cdffey and Dr. John D, Hum- ber of San Prancisco. The 53-year-old attorney was one of hundreds who were attracted by announcement of a serum that indicated to its sponsors that it dissolved cancerous tissues. In a letter received by friends here a few days ago Zumbrunn wrote that he had taken the treatment and ex- pressed the opinion that he was better. The malignant allment forced him to withdraw from professional work about a year ago, and he went to the Pacific Coast to regain his health, Zumbrunn was born in Nebraska, but his career had its setting in Kansas City, where he practiced law from 1905 until 1023, and in Washington. He gained recognition for his defense in the election contests of Senator Earl Mayfleld of Texas and Senator Daniel F. Bteck of Towa. Shofily after these contests were concluded he became identified with the Klan and main- tained the affiliation until he left Wash- ington. He had offices here in the Southern Building. Zumbrunn was not married. Advices to friends here were that the funeral will be held tomorrow in Beverly Hills, with interment there. REFUSAL TO FIGHT HELD U. S. LOYALTY Church Round Table Speaker De- clares Nation’s Signature Out- lawing War Fixes Duty. By the Associated Pres: EVANSTON, IIl, February 27.—Rev. Dr. Charles Clayton Morrison of Chi- cago, editor of the Christian Century, sald yesterday that it is the part of good citizenship to refuse to bear arms, now that the United States has signed the pact of Paris outlawing war. The minister-editor was speaking be- fore one of the round-table discussions organized as part of the third national study conference of the National Com- mittee on Churches and World Peace, sponsored by the Federal Council of the Churches of Christ in America. The discussion centered around the general ers who have consclentious scruples against swearing that they will bear arms in sunport of the Government in case of war. The specific cases Ciscussed were those of Rosicka Schwimmer of Aus- tria, internationally known peace worker, and the Rev. Dr. Douglas Mc- Intyre of Yale University Divinity School, both of whom were denied citi- zenship because they expressed con- scientious objections to bearing arms. Participants in the discussion, which was closed to newspaper men. criticized the decision of the United States Su- preme Court upholding the refusal of papers in the Schwimmer case and the dissenting opinion of Justice Holmes was read. “We are way behind the times in talking about conscientions objectors,” said Dr. Morrison, when it came his turn to speak. “The thing to talk about now is loyalty to the United States Gov- ernment. The Government has signed the Paris peace pact, by which it has outlawed war. Therefore, it is good citizenship and the highest patriotism on the part of every individual to re- fuse to bear arms.” — LOST. flmr,rr_(‘:flyng ;Pixffxn (AlredaleTrixh to 5”y. B r, long tall.
