BOARD APPROVES SCHOOL REPORT U. S. Bureau Recommenda- tions for Arlington Institu- tions Favored in Principle. BY JOHN T. LIPSCOMB, Staff Correspondent of The Star. CLARENDON, Va, February 27— The report of a county school survey made by the United States Bureau of Education under the direction of Dr. Frank M. Phillips and W. S. Deffen- baugh and recommending additions to the Washington-Lee High School and several elementary schools at an esti- mated cost of $355,000, was last night approved by the county school board in principle, the board reserving the right to amend any or all of its pro- visions and recommendations. The report recommends a bond issue of $580,000, the balance after deduct- ing cost of proposed construction to be ussd in liquidating an indebtedness of $225.000 in short-term loans, used dur- ing the last building program. Plans Special Meeting. Announcement was made that the board would hold a special meeting in the near future more carefully to con- sider the various features of the re- port. In the meantime, the civic or- ganizations of the county, it is expected, will study the proposal and register their sentiment. ~ Already two of these organizations, the Lyon Park and Lyon Village Associations, have approved the plan in so far as the improvements proposed for the Washington-Lee High and the James Monroe and Henry Clay Schools are concerned. Pleas of citizens of Jefferson district for a high school in that section to re- lace George Mason High, which was [oet “to the district through annexa- tion, were brought to the attention of MEXICO IS PROMISED that & census of the present and tential population is now being mad ": to determine the present and future needs of the area. Sohoot Doy patrol vo ek " pans a sc pa ac co-oper- ation with the American Automobile Association. Such a movement, it was said, would put the board under a re- sponsibility which it does not care to take. The board, it was pointed out, could be relleved of responsibility for any harm that might happen to mem- bers of such a patrol by getting per- mission from the parents, but it could be held to account for any injuries suf- fered by children being conducted across the road by members of the patrol. It was voted by the board to have County Engineer C. L. Kinnier pre- plr? plans and call for bids for the ex- of the Washington-Lee High school sewer. An extension of approxi- mately 2,000 feet is necessary, it was said, to abate a nuisance at the sewer’s outlet. Appointment of one new teacher at Washington-Lee was authorized by the | board. An additional teacher at the | school is made necessary, according to Prof. Kemp, due to the recent inaugu tion of the sliding scale of classes. The night school being conducted at ‘Washington-Lee has cost the school board $10.50 from October 1 to Febru- ary 1, according to report of Prof. Kemp. The tuition fees of the 75 pupils amounted to $607.50 and the ex- penses of running the school have totaled $618.00 Request of the Arlington Citizens’ | Association that it be allowed to use the | Patrick Henry School for its meetings | was approved by the board.
