A laborer reports having seem thres men on the mioht of the murder at & svot close to the stretch of river where the body was found. Sefton Enoleden, the colonel's mephew, begins an_investipa~ tion of his own with the aid of his law clerk. The colomel's diary teils of the escape of two convicts from Southmoor vears ago. They also learn that the colonel, just defore his death, had sent a me: to the prison authorities ask. ing whether any of the werders who were at the prison in his time are still there. Johnson Delieves that the colonel may have encountered the escaped con- viets and that they killed him. Mallison, superintendent of molice, does mot know of this development. He tells Engleden that bank motes that were knows to have been on the colonel’s person have been traced and that it has been estal lished that they were chanped by soldier from a meardy darracks. Johs son and Enoleden retain Millwaters, one of the warders in charoe of the convicts who escaped. Since leaving the prison he has been engaged in private detec- tive work. He accepts commission and, & few hours later, he is murdered. The man who finds the body tells of hearing shots and seeing & man flee. Capt. Shoreham, an oficial at South- moor, arrives with descriptions of the escaped convicts. One of them— Snelling—had a peculiar dirth mark on his right wrist. The next witness was Charlie Goodhind,. landlord of the cro'n & Cushion Inn, at Harlington, who said that on the night after the news of the Barowsburgh affs l.ir had ffl! about he changed a 5-pound note for a private lomhrfmmuum at Wraisdale Moor. Happening to read of the notes missing in relation to the murder of Col. Engleden, he took the note he had received to Supt. Mallison of Barowsburgh and discovered that it was one of the notes stolen from the murdered genuem-n. He had been given an oppommny ph:k.ln; out the man who changed the note from among a row of other soldiers, and had pointed to Luttrell, the man he now saw in the dock. He had no doubt whatever that Luttrell was the man who changed the note. He would swear it. ‘The next witness was Detective Sergt. Peol attached to the local police force. Peel sald that he had been put in charge of the case by Supt. Mallison, after information just referred to had he.n given, and with another detective, , had visited the camp at Wrais- dlla Moor. He had evenmlly received information which had led him to ques- tion the defendants as to their move- ments on the night of the murder; fur- ther investigation and the receipt of mon information had led to their ar- {lflufil’ afternoon. On being !onnl charged they made no reply, but, as they were being brought to Barowsburgh, Clarkson remarked that he could say something if he liked. “After arresting Luttrell and Clark- son,” ‘continued Peel, “I searched their quarters. Each man had a locked box by his cot. On opening the box be- longing to Luttrell I found, concealed among clothing at the bottom of the box, a number of five-pound notes, which I now produce. The numbers of these notes correspond with the numbers on a list in the possession of EuptA Mallison, which was furnished to him by Mr. Sefton Engleden. I also found in Luttrell's box a gold watch and chain—I produce both. In Clark- son's box I found more five-pound notes, a diamond ring and a diamond scarf pin—I produce all these. Peel detalled his discoveries, Luttrell turned on his fellow prisoner and be- gan to excitedly; another mo- ment, and he was gesticulating to the defending solicitor.
