PR B—16 MT. VERNON ROAD BILL IS REPORTED Virginia House Committee Favors Measure Giving U. S. Condemnation Powers. By a Staft Correspondent of The Star. OND, Va., February 28.—The House committee on roads and internal navigation yesterday gave a favorable | report on the Ball Senate bill giving the Bureau of Public Roads, United States | Department of Agriculture, the same right with respect to the condemnation of land for the Mount Vernon boule- vard project as is now enjoyed by the WVirginia _State Highway Commission. The bill has already been passed by the Senate, I The measure was prepared when it was learned that the plans of the Fed- eral Government to have the new boule- vard between Washington and Mount Vernon finished in time for the bi- centennial celebration of the birth of George Washington in 1932 were en- dangered which gave only to the State | body the right to pmce!d with con- struction during condemnation proceed- ings. Th? House passed a joint resolution for the formation of & special body | composed of the governas, director of the division of motor vehicles and the | chairman of the State Corporation Commission and State Highway Com- | mission to make a full investigation of the question of compulsory automobile liability insurance and operators' per- mits. In the Senate the resolution was referred to the committee on roads and internal navigation. Members are under the impression that the measure is designed as a sub- stitute for the Lesner-Ball “safety re- sponsibility” and “driver’s permit” bills ed in the Senate and now held in House committee. CHILE-TO-MIAMI AIR MAIL TAKES 7 DAYS| Nyrba Line's Giant Plane Cuba Completes Inaugural Flight to America. By the Associated Press. MIAMI, Fla., February 27.—The | Cuba, huge airplane of the New York, Rio and Buenos Aires Airline, arrived | here at 2:45 o'clock yesterday afternoon, completing the inaugural flight between Santiago, Chile, and Miami. Seven and one-half days were required, which is less than the time called for in the schedule. The plane brought more than 1,000 pounds of mail from South American countries for the United States and European natons. Included in the mail was an official letter from President Washington Luis of Brazil to Presi- dent Hoover congratulating Mr. Hoover upon the opening of the airline between Brazil and the United States. Starting from Santiago on Tuesday, Pebruary 18, mail and express were carried over the Andes on a schedule which has been operated since last September. The cargo was transferred in Buenos Aires to marine equipment and started up the east coast of South America. MEXICO FEARS INVASION BY AMERICAN GANGSTERS Special Dispatches to Nation’s Cap- ital Newspapers Hint at Ex- odus From U. 8. By the Associated Press. MEXICO CITY, February 27.—Dan- ger of an invasion of Mexico by gang- sters obliged to leave Chicago because of the campaign against them there is reflected ln special dispatches to the local pape ‘The p.pern suggest that a strict watch ‘be kept along the border to keep these eriminals from moving to Mexico, point- ing out that their coming probably would mean a crime wave such as Mex- ico never has experienced. A dispatch to Excelsior from Los An- geles says that there has been an influx of Chicago gangsters there, but that the Los Angeles police have made condi- tions unsuitable: for them and that many of them are heading toward the Lower California border. REDS TO LEAVE MEXICO. Society Affiliated With Interna- tionale Plans to Move to U. 8. MEXICO CITY, February 27 (#).— Because its activities have been restrict- ed by the government, the Red Aid So- clety, affiliated with the Red Interna- tionale, will abandon Mexico, according to a statement issued by the secretary of the local chapter. | ‘The secretary said he planned to move his headquarters to New York, where there is more field for action. The Mexican government recently has been taking energetic steps to stamp out Communist propaganda here. Fog. Porcel B\g Plane Down CLEVELAND, Ohio, February 27 (). ~Pilot Leon Sherrick of the Stout Afr Lines Inc. late Tuesday landed his tri-motor ship carrying 14 passengers at an emergency field in Vermillion, Ohjo. Bound for Cleveland from De- troit, Sherrick found himself unable to penetrate a heavy fog and made the landing rather than attempt to come into the Cleveland airport.
