He had gone early to bed,in ‘\!irw of the work to be done tomor- row. From his slumbers he was awak- ened abruptly, with Johanna's volce ringing in his ears. It had called his name thrice and it had been so laden with appeal and with despair that the memory of it now | drove into his soul the conviction that she was in distress or danger, and for a moment in that conviction he was } frenzied by the thought of the distance ]scmntlng them. Then the impression faded. The calm sway of fully awak- ened Intelligence supervened. He had dreamt—that was all. Often voices are heard so in dreams. What harm should come to her? She was secure and shel- tered, the honored wife of a prosperous burgher. He was so wide awake that to woo sleep again was out of all question. He rose and went forth into the street. Long he paced there, reviewing and re- viling the course of events since that evening when he had left Flushing. From Peronne he had accompanied the duke to Liege, with this great army at their heels, brought thither for the purpose of inflicting a terrible and mer- ciless vengeance upon that little inde+ pendent state which had dared with- stand Burgundian encroachments upon its_liberties. This ruthless abuse of strength had outraged Count Anthony's sense of chivalry. It was not for this that he had brought his men of Guelders into the ducal army. He had joined hands with Charles to withstand a menace of war from the King of France, not to aid in the butchery of & population of & sans who had improvised themselves into soldiers because their homes were threatencd. And butchery, a massacre, was Burgundy's dpresent object, delib- erate and avowed. Liege was to serve as an example. The papal legate had come in tears to intercede with Charles to spare the lives at _least of those unfortunate people. Even their own prince-bishop, the profligate Louls of Bourbon, on whose worthless behalf this war had first been waged, had implored for his subjects the lenience of the duke. But Charles had met their prayers with scorn. Liege, he declared, should be demolished and its people stamped out of existence like vermin under the heels of his troops. Count Anthony's argument was that & wise prince would not stamp out a populous, industrious and wealthy city which with its dependencies might be brought within the ambit of now her loyalty. but confirmed in it by this ojmosmon. “We desire no such pestilent sub. Jects,” was his angry reply. Thereupon . There is no more terrible page in the terrible history of sacked cities, aban- doned deliberately to the lawless greed and lust of a brutal soldiery, than that which deals with the sack of Liege. To each division of the army a dis- trict of the city was assigned, and with- in that district all was to be theirs without restriction. Rapacity, cruelty and lust were thus let loose upon Liege by ducal license. Nothing was spared. ‘The very churches were sacked and those who had sought sanctuary in them butchered without regard to age or_condition. For a_week the sack of Liege en- dured. Then, the part of the soldiers being fully accomplished, they" were replaced by an army of laborers from Luxembourg, who were to destroy the citv by fire and then level the ruins with the ground. For seven weeks after the duke's departure, Liege continued to burn, until only the churches and the houses THE EVEN One of World-Famou William Tell. BY JOHANN ZSCHOKKE. (Johann Heinrich Danial Zschokke, 1771- 1848, was a_German writer, author of many collections of tales which have earned him enduring tame.) | In a certain town of Switzerland the | balliff, by name Hermann Gessler, was uneasy. He was not easy in his mind because he had an evil conscience. On account of his evil conscience, it seemed to him that the people began to raise | their heads and to show more and more boldness. ‘Therefore, Hermann Gessler, the bailiff, set the ducal hat of Austria upon a pole in Url and ordered that every {one who passed before it should do it reverence—doffing the hat and all that | it implied. By this means he wished to {learn who was opposed to Austria. Willlam Tell, the fanied archer of Burglen, one of the men of Rutli, passed before it, but he did not bow or doff his hat. He was immediately taken into custody and carried before the bailiff. Hermann Gessler spoke angrily as follows: “Insolent archer, I intend to I will place an apple on the head of your little son. You are ordered to shoot it off, with an arrow—and you must not fail So they bound the child and placed an apple on his head, as Hermann Gess~ ler commanded. Then they led William Tell, the archer, far away. It was to be & long shot, indeed, even for a skilled | archer. | But William Tell took aim—the bow- it oo s pred e e the people shou or joy. wgut Gessler, the balliff, said to the archer: “Why did you have a second arrow ready to use?” To which Willlam Tell made answes 'If the first had not plerced the apple, the second would assuredly have pierced your heart. and he ordered tye archer to be seized and carried to & boat, in which he him- self was about to embark for Kuss. nacht.
