TREECUTTING WAR WAGED BY WOMAN Thrice Arrested and Freed for Heckling and Hamper- | ing State Workmen. Bpecial Dispatch to The Star. SHEPHERDSTOWN, W. Va, Feb- ruary 7.—The fight of citizens in this section against the State program of cedar tree eradication in the interest of cedar rust control on apple trees reached the spectacular stage today | when county officers arrested one wom- an three times for her insistent protests. Miss Violet Dandridge proved a vig- orous protester when she seated herself beneath the ornamental tree in the | yard of Miss Sue Lemen and refused to budge, even when workmen brought their axes into play. | Three times she was placed under | arrest and released. She made off with | workmen's tools—stood in their way as | they swung their axes—sang songs | criticizing their patriotism and ham-| pered their work generally. Miss Dand- | ridge has recently purchased the ILemen estate. Winds Arms About Tree. Dramatically winding her arms about a majestic 40-foot cedar in the yard, with the American flag waving in the wind at its top as an peal to the patriotism of the lumberjacks, Miss Dandridge refused to move and work- men were forced to tsar her away from the tree and carry her away bodily. But she was soon back to continue her prote: She placed her body be- tween the notch chipped by the lumber- | men and defied them to swing their axes, | When the 14 workers in the yard en gaged in cutting down the cedars proved | 100 much for her. she changed her tac- tics and gathering up as many tools as | she could carry hurled them into the Potomac River, . which passes near the| property. { She varied her procedure further and | collected a number of tool kits, which | she placed in her automobile and took away. Tears Off Doorknob. Officers armed with search warrants were forced to climb up ladders to a sec- ond-story room, where Miss Dandridge . has secreted the tools after locking the door and tearing off the doorknob. ‘They climbed through a window and retrieved the tools and took her before Justice Moler. ‘The justice declared that punishment was futile and withheld judgment. He passed similar action when she was ?‘l’mxlht before him a second and third me. H. W. Potts, another protestor, stated today he proposed asking Gov. Conley o name a commission to investigate the persistence in the cutting campaign. He said he would ask others to join him in the appeai. Meanwhile Mrs. R. C. Ringgold, re- siding here, has been awarded a tempo- rary injunction in, Circuit Court here against W. E. Rumsey, State entomol- ogist of the State department of agri- | culture, and Woods Rannells, in charge of the cedar-cutting section, restraining | the cutters from hewing ornamental back-door cedars on her property under a State law. CANON CITY, Colo, February 7.— Within the gray granite walls of the Colorado State Penitentiary a restless prison population awoke today to find itself under control of a military dicta- tor—a man who rose from a sick bed to strike with the mailed fist at a riotous group of convicts who in four months have taken 13 lives and caused inesti- mable property damage. ‘The man, austere in manner and curt in speech, is Col. Patrick J. Hamrock, bred to Army traditions and by his own admission “a fighting Irishman.” He | led troops and won honors in the Sioux in Cuba and in| Indian campaigns, France. The dictatorship was declared yester- day by a harried State board of correc- tion, which just had worded a public statement refusing to gomply with a demand by Gov. William H. Adams that t resign. Its edict of military rule in it the walled city said that, while Warden | F. E. Crawford would retain his post, Col. Hamrock would be given entire charge of the guards and prisoners. Rising from the hospital bed where he was recuperating from a three-week fliness, Col. Hamrock entered the prison only a few hours after his appointment. Grim Task Faces Deputy. A grim task faced the new “special deputy warden” on his first day in full charge. Yesterday Warden Crawford received a tip that three revolvers and some nitro-glycerin were secreted within the prison walls. Members of the State law enforcement department _turned the prison topsy-turvy in an effort to locs SOUTHERN the possible means of a new revolt, but without result. Col. Hamrock Wil prosecute the search today. The quest is a life-and-death matter to the prison population of 1.100 men— | prisoners and guards. A story of in- trigue, bloody mutiny and constant unrest is the history of the Canon City Prison, and_ weapons within its walls are regarded as matches in & powder barrel. Y The first open rebellion of the prison’s | history flamed in 1900 after a period |of discontent marked by numerous | escapes. Two men were killed after | inciting a riot and attempting to escape in the confusion. Quiet Under Tynan. |,. Then Tom Tynan became warden and the prison was quiet under his progres- sive administration. Tynan Tesigned in 1927 under political pressure, how- ever, and after a short interval was succeeded by Warden Crawford, the present titular head of the !nst!tlmon. Since his inauguration mutterings of discontent caused by crowded quarters, lack of occupation and a gubernatorial | policy which has denied pardons and | commutations has grown into an open |campaign of sabotage among the | inmates. | The sanguinary riot of last October | was its climax. Led by an arch-con- | spirator, Danny Daniels, a desperate | handful’ of convicts instigated a wide- | spread mutiny in_which 13 guards and | prisoners lost their lives | Daniels Commits Suicide, Early on the erisp, gray morning of | October 4 the besiegers, noting no more | shots came from the cellhouse, rushed the building to find Daniels dead, a suicide. About him lay his companions, whom he had slain before taking his e fown life, COOKING Featuring a Delicious Table d’Hote Dinner for $1.25 Bountifully varied menus for appetites whetted by bracing salt air., H ere’s an outstanding 1930 fea- ture on all N, & W. ships.
