By the Associated Press. | NEW YORK, February 7.—A plea to Americans to guard against indulgence in the hysteria and passions which a threat of war would evoke throughout the country was voiced last night by KAlanson B. Houghton, former United States Ambassador at Berlin and at London, in a speech at the thirty-fifth apnual dinner of the Steuben County Soclety. Mr. Houghton, who recently réturned from his London post, was guest of honor at the dinner. He reviewed the progress toward peace made since the World War, but) _ ssid that much remains to be done. “If we can make America safe against the hysteria and passions Wwhich & threat of war would unques- tlonably evoke, we need not trouble curselves too greatly over the hysteria and passion of other peoples.” Another speaker at the dinner was Dr. F. M. Von Prittwitz, German Am- bassador to the United States, who paid a tribute to Mr. Houghton for his work in restoring friendly relations be- tween the United States and Germany after the World War. James W. Gerard, United States Am- Bassador to Berlin before the United States entered the World War, de- seribed in a short address the havoc | wrought by the great conflict, and | pictured the ties which bind America | and Germany. Born in. Howard City, Mich., Kohler has been a resident of Washington for the past 21 years, during which time he had become widely known in the restaurant business. He is survived by his widow, Mrs, Madeline = Kohler; three brothers, Charles, Albert and Harmon Kohler of Michigan, and four sisters, Mrs. Anna Black and Mrs. Fred Black of Michigan, and Mrs, Mary Moliter and Mrs. Hattie Manson of California. Mr. Kohler was a member of Lebanon Lodge, No. 7, F. A. A. M. Funeral services will be held at the residence_at 2 o'clock tomorrow aft- ernoon. Rev.
