JOHNSON SCORES SECRETARY NELLON California Senator Charges? Neglect and Discourtesy in Correspondence. “Some things that simply are not done in official life” were laid at the door of Secretary of the Treasury Mel- lon yesterday by Senator Johnson, Re- publican, of California, who was speak- ing his mind concerning an exchange of correspondence with Secretary Mel- lon_over patronage in California. “They are,” said Senator Johnson, “the refusal to reply to a courteous communication within reasonable time, that is official in character, by any de- partment, or a reply that may be elther mistaken or deceptive in character. He said the Secretary of the Treasury replied that “This department knows of no reason why the policy which has been followed since 1925 should be changed at this time and is not recom- mending the appointment of a surveyor | at San Francisco.” Johnson related how Tracy then was appointed three months later to this office which had been abandoned. He said he then wrote to Mr. Mellon, but received no reply. Senator Johnson also related how he had inquired about the appointment of an internal revenue collector for San Francisco last Summer. He sald Sec- retary Mellon answered his letter a month later and after the appointment of & new man hag been made. MILWAUKEE, Wis, February 7.— For the second time in less than 24 hours Milwaukee police were called vpon yesterday to break up demonstra- tions of jobless men. A crowd estimated at 75, addressed by a soap-box orator in front of an em- ployment agency, were dispersed by police yesterday. No arrests were made. The speaker declared there would be a city-wide demonstration against present conditions of “unemployment right at the time every, ome is yelling about | prosperity.” | A parade of jobless men ended in rout Wednesday. VALENCIA, Spain, February 7.—The | municipality of Valencia yesterday sent a petition to the Berenguer government | asking that the name of Vicente Blasco Ibanez, celebrated Spanish novelist, be restcred in the naming of one of the principal squares in the city. Blasco Ibanez was a bitter enemy of the Rivera dictatorship, dying in exile in France several years ago, and his name had been ordered effaced from the plaza the Valencians had named in honor of him. ‘The novelist was born in Valencia. Although the Queen has recovered to a large extent from the attack she had in Rome last June, she is quite unable to spend a but the very warmest months in dinavia.
