FINANCIAL, ¢ CURB STOCKS GAIN THE SUNDAY STAR, WASHINGTON, D. C., JANUARY 5, 1930—PART TWO. FINANCIAL. Corporation News AT SHORT SESSION Profit Taking Absorbed as Market Tends Higher. Motors Active. BY CLAUDE A. JAGGER, Associated Press Pinancial Writer. NEW YORK, January 4.—Curb mar- ket stocks were bid moderately higher in a dull and thin week-end session to- day. = Pre-holiday profit taking was in moderate volume, and readily absorbed. The few motor stocks on this market were bid up in sympathy with the motor show demonstration on the big board. Ford Motor of Canada B, a closel: held and rormally a wide mov- ing stock, was hurled up several points, but reacted and closed with a net gain of only 315 points. The A stock closed &t 33, up l3. Durant Motor rose 3% of & point to 612, and Cord Corporation and Stutz moved up ;. In the utilities, American Gas mounted 5 points. and such shares as American Superpower, Associated Gas A, Allied Power & Light and Hydro- Electric Securities made small gains. Niagara Hudson gained nearly a point. Electric Bond & Share sold up a little but closed practically unchanged. Investment trusts were generally firm, National Investors mounting more than 2 peints, and Goldman Sachs nearly 2. Lehman Corpor- ation, however, slipped back about 2 points in profit taking on its gain of nearly 10 points earlier in the week. were firm, Cities Service, Humble and Gulf gaining about 3j. ‘Tubize jumped more than 10 points in a small turnover. . Baltimore Markets Epecial Dispatch to The Star. BALTIMORE, Md., January 4—With the holiday demand over the egg mar- ket slumped badly the latter part of the week and is still unsettled with values from 8 to 10 cents lower on strictly fresh stock, including hennery white firsts, closing today at ¢5 cents a dozen for both hennery whits and firsts; 40 cents for pullets, whi'> culls and dirty | V° e.fivfll not bring o*er 25 to 30 cents. e live poultry riarket alsp showed @ decline as is urial at this time of Live ;oung turkeys eight pounds and over selling 28 to 32 and NEW YORK, January 4—The fol- lowing is today's summary of important corperation news, ared 8t M ard Statistics Co., Inc., New York, for the Assoclated Press: The Industries. Cotton—Department of Iture’s report that of 12,141,000 of do- mestic cotton ginned in United States prior to December 1, 1920, 10,040,000 were tenderable, or 782 per cent. In 1928 out of 12,540,000 bales, 85.3 per cent was tenderable. The total umg& 9, compared with 13,638, bales in 1928. Electric output-produc- | tien of electricity by public utility power plants for November, 1929, showed an increase of 6 per eent over the same month in 1928. Average in- crease for the preceding 10 months was 11.9 per cent. This moderate increase, which is the lowest of any month in the last two years, is attributed to the industrial depression. Total output for month was 8,240,000,000 k. w. h., 466,~ 000,000 k. w. h. below October, but an | increase of 487,000,000 k. w. h, over| November, 1928. Retail trade-avaflable evidence indicates that pre-holiday trade in 1929 closely approximated that of 1928, thus bringing the total for the year just closed to the highest level on record. With buying for Christmas needs past, a sharp drop in purchases at retail is looked for, volume for the present month is expected to be at least 5 ver cent below that of the same 1929 month, with expectation of & further recession in remaining months of the first quarter. Accompanying de- cline in total sales there will probably develop a shift in buying from the more expensive to cheaper merchandise. The Companies. Anaconda Wire & Cable earned $1.39 in quarter to September 30, 1929. Centrifugal Pipe Co. declares four quarterly 15 ‘cent dividends for 1930 requirements. Colorado Fuel & Iron receives order for 10,850 tons rail from Chicago, Bur- lington & Quincy Railroad. Edison Bros. Stores December sales up 27.4 per cent; 12 months, 25.6 per cent above year ago. Greif Bros. Cooperage earned $4.10 in | 12 months to October 31, 1929, against $3.38 in previous year on A shares, and earned $295 against $1.87 in same periods on B shares. Hudson Motor Car base price of new eight-cylinder line redus 845, com- pared with old line. Sheaffer Pen 1929 sales increased more than $1,000,000 over previous ear.
