[ FINANCIAL. UPTURN IN STOCKS MARKS WEEK END Trading Shows Expansion in Volume as Prices Con- tinue to Advance. BY STANLEY W. PRENOSIL, Associated Press Financial Editor. NEW YORK, January 4.—The first week of the new year on the New York Stock Exchange closed today with the ;fi:lnl movement of prices upward. quotations disclosed a rather long list of net gains ranging from 1 to 5 points, interspersed with a number of declines, most of which were fractional. ‘Trading showed a marked expansion in volume, sales for the two-hour ses- sion totaling 1,359,700 shares as con- trasted with 893,500 shares in the first two hours yesterday. Technical Recovery. ‘There was practically nothing in the day’s business news to influence the price movement, such trade reports as came to hand merely confirming what already had been known. Today's rally was characterized by many observers as a technical recovery after the sharp decline caused earlier in the week by the heavy volume of selling for income (I ugh the = usual “window dressing” wln:ldent with the opening of the New York automobile show, but the demonstration lacked the vigor of those of the past few years. Hudson and Nash each showed net gains of more than 2 points and Mack ‘Trucks 134, but Chrysler, Packard and General Motors, which were turned over in rather large volume, showed only fractional gains. Coppers showed signs "of increasing activity and strength as the session closed in expectation that consumers, ‘who appear have adopted a “hand- to-mouth” buying policy in recent months, will shortly be forced to enter the market on a large scale. Anaconda, Kennecott and Smelting advanced from 1 to nearly 2 points. Leaders in Advance. Allied Chemical, Industrial Rlyun and Otis Elevator closed 5 higher, Pacific Lighting and Loulsvme & Nashville, 434 each; McKeesport Tin Plate, 3%; Auburn Auto, 3, and West- inghouse Electric, Standard Gas & Electric, Hershey Chocolate, Motor Products, International Mercantile rine, J. I. Case, National Biscuit and S. H. Kress all showed net gains of 2 points or more. Foreign exchange trading was quiet, ‘with most of the European currencies displaying an easier undertone. Sterling cablzs were quoted around $4.879-16. Recurrent weakness developed in the Chinese and Argentine exchanges. > ——— BANKS FORM MERGER.
