14 TRCABISHOP BUYS VAN NADONNA Peking Papal Delegate Pur-f chases Work of American } Woman Artist. j | By the Associated Press. PEKING, May 18.—A painting of the Madonna by an American artist, Mrs. | Bertha Lum, has been chosen by the ! papal delegate to China for his private chapel in Peking. | His excellency, Archbishop Celso Con- stantini, apostolic ~ representative, | searched several years before finding a | picture which met all his qualifications. Mrs. Lum, formerly Miss Bertha Boynton Bull of Tipton and Cedar | Rapids, Towa, has had a studio in| Peking six vears, coming here from | Tokio. She is best known in the United States for her Japanese wood block prints exhibited at the Panama Pacific | International exposition in San Fran- cisco in 1915. Mrs. Lum, a graduate of the Chicago Art Institute, also has ex- hibited prints as well as paintings in New York. Washington, Chicago. Min- | neapolis, London, Paris, The Hague and cities in the Orient. Face Is Composite. The artist'’s interpretation of the eountenance of this Mother of God, copies of which are to be hung in every | Catholic Church in China, is neither Occidental nor Oriental, but rather a composite face, art critics here agreeing | that the soft blues and greens and the | Aark and pale yellows will harmonize | splendidly with the decorations in the various edifices of worship. Chin: Headquarters of the papal dele were established in Peking five ago. Mgr. Constantini resided tem- porarily in Hankow several years until the Chinese Catholics persuaded him that the proper place for the dele- gation was in the centuries old capital, which at that time was “not only the first city in the land, but also the home | of the earliest apostles of the gospel.” What was previously the Chinese an- cestors' shrine, in which the tablets of | the dead of the family were venerated i according to Chinese rites of many cen- turies standing, now has been converted into an altar. Employs Ancient Process. | The grand hall, in the old days re- served for reception of princes of the blood, has become the pontifical audi- ence chamber, dominated by the por- traits of the Pope. After 15 years in Japan, specializing on the making and printing of wood cuts, Mrs. Lum came to Peking to con- tinue her art. The wood block process. she uses is virtually the same as that employed 300 to 400 vears ago, all of | the work being done by hand. | it SKULL FRACTURE FEARED. Colored Water Department Em- ploye Struck by Falling Rock. James Wills, 61 years old, colored, an employe of the District Water Depart- ment, is believed to have suffered s fractured skull when a large rock rolled from a dirt pile into the ditch he was digging and hit him yesterday. Went to Europe as Tourist and Started Enterprise by Chance. By a Staff Correspondent of The Star. JOPLIN, Mo., May 18.—When Mary | Bendelari, 16-year-old daughter of & Joplin mine owner, went to Europe six | years ago she was just one of the army of post-war tourists. | ‘When she came home this Spring she | had gained international distinction as an authority on modish tootwear. She | owns & smart shop in Paris, where she sells what her French factory raakes, and designs for several concerns. Miss Bendelari was just out of art school when she went to Europe. Her business of selling handsome shoes to the elite began as a hobby with $3,000 capital, a gift of her father. noticed some unusual shoes of leather and woven cord, worn by Balkan peas- ants. She made a drawing and sent it Bohemian shoemaker to copy the draw- | Ing, using straw instead of the original | woven cord. The result was the Deau- ville sandal. | ‘The Joplin girl established a factcry and began with a small crew of skillful | shoemakers. Now the factory )s in two buildings and 100 employes call tic Mis- | |souri miss “la petite patronne,” their “little boss.” | Miss Bendelari later opened the re- | tail establishment, and out of it grew | other shops in various countries. | She considers an important style | trend at present to be the development and use of pajama slippers. MARY BENDELARIL Emergency Aid in the 0il Field. | The efforts of the Government to get coal mine laborers interested in safety | measures has proven such a great suc- | cess that the same process is being in- | oduced among the workers in the oil industry. First-aid teams were organ- ized among the coal workers, and by | the means of contests a great interest was aroused among the workers so that | every mining center in Pennsylvania | and other mining localities had their | first-aid squads properly organized and | equipped for any kind of services they | would be called upon to perform. The | system is now being extended to the oil fields of Indiana, where there are thou- sands of persons engaged in the prepa- ration of oil and gas for consumption. ‘The value of the training was dem- onstrated recently in Colorado, where a workman was overcome by the fumes | from a gas well that he had just put in operation. There happened to be present a workman who had taken such instruction in another flield of operation some time before, and through his ef- forts the stricken workman was worked over and restored to life by artificlal HOTEL DUPONT 1400 NEW_HAMPSHIRE AVE.
