10 THE SUNDAY STAR, WASHINGTON, D. C.. MAY 19, 1929—PART T.° SOUCEK MAY SEEK NEW MARK MONDAY Seaplane Altitude Record, Held by Lieut. Champion Is Aim of Flyer. An attempt to break the scaplane | altitude record will be made probably Monday or Tuesday by Lieut. Apollo Soucek, holder of the world's altitude | record, in the same plane, the Apache, | in_which he soared to record heights | & few days ago. ‘The mark Lieut. Soucek will have to beat is 37,995 feet, established by Lieut. C. C. Champion on July 4, 1927. Lieut. Soucek will have to better Lieut. Champlon’s mark by 100 meters, a little more than 300 feet, for the rec- ord to be recognized as official. The holder of the world altitude record to- day declared that Lieut. Champion's record is one that will be very difficult 1o better. Mark “Just About” the Ceiling. “I believe that Lieut. Champlon’s mark is just about the ceiling for sea- planes, as we know them now, but I believe, naturally, that I can get the Apache above that mark again,” Soucek said. The Apache is being fitted with a pontoon at the Anacostia Naval Air Station for the next record attempt. The tips of the Apache’s propeller have been shaved off to give clearance necessitated by the fitting of the sca- plane landing gear and several other minor adjustments will have to be made before Lieut. Soucek will go up for the | seaplane altitude record. The only major change in the Apache, however, will be the placing of a pon- toon where the landing gear was when Lieut. Soucek established his record of 40,000 feet a few days ago, exceeding a mark held also by Lieut. Champion. Ceveral flights will have to be made, Lieut. Soucek said, to determine just what the Apache’s behavior will be under the new conditions. He sug-|" gested that there may be needed some changes in the propeller after its shortening and that other deviations from the ship's original design mighf Turther increase its efficlency. : PAY HONOR TO MEMORY OF LINCOLN AND GRANT Ladies of G.
