Conservation Improved lighting in the lhomes and schools is urged in a state- | ment issued vesterday by the Eyesight i Conservation Council of America, which | is conducting a national movement un- der the leadership of a group of Gov- ernment officfals, including Secretary of Labor James J. Davis, for better vision in education and industry. The council points out that a study just completed by the committee on light and safety.disclosed that poor con- ditions of illumination have an adverse effect upon intellectual activity. Dr. Morton G. Lloyd, chief of the safety section of the United States Bu- reau of Standards, in a report of the findings of a subcommittee on home and school lighting, pointed out that “cantinued application of the eyes under conditions of fatigue leads to eye strain, which is frequently accompanied by other bodily ailments. “It is reported that many students have been obliged to drop their work in evening schools on account of eye trou- bles, which were ascribed to the condi- tions of artificial lighting.” ‘The report added that 46 per cent of the learning acquired by the average in- dividual has been ascribed to eyesight.
