Bartlett of New Hampshire, First Assistant Postmaster General, has been asked by President Hoover to ac- ! cept the post of chairman of the Inter- natlonal Joint Commission, and has the | | tender under advisement. Chairmanship of the commission, | which deals with many questions be- | tween the United States and Canada other than those relating to boundaries, became vacant May 1 with the retire- |ment of former Senator Clarence B. Clark of Wyoming, whose resignation was suggested by the President. Mr. Bartlett was appointed First As- sistant_Postmaster General by Presi- | dent Harding, and has served under three chiefs, Willlam H. Hays, Harry S. New and Walter F. Brown. His ap- pointment_as Postmaster General was urged by Senator Moses of New Hamp- shire, who also asked that he be re- tained as first assistant. Mr. Bartlett tendered his resignation as First Assistant Postmaster General shortly after March 4. After it was announced that this would be accepted it was stated he would be given a high post by the administration, which de- sired to retain a man of his ability. JURY SETS FREE PAIR HELD IN LIQUOR CASE William Ma;;; an;l-Mnry Jones Acquitted in Police Court. A Police Court jury vesterday ac- quitted William Maragos and Mary Jones of charges of sale, possession and possession of property designed for the unlawful manufacture of intoxicating liquor, Jack brown, similarly chargd, was discharged when Judge Isaac R. Hitt ordered a directed verdict of not Raiding an apartment in the 1900 | block of K street, December 20, 1928, the vice squad was said to have seized a large supply of holiday liquor, con- sisting_of more than 300 pints. Sergt. O. J. Letterman, Detectives R. J. Cox, W. F. Burke and G. C. McCarron de- claged, when filing the information con- cerning the raid, that a police informer made & “buy” before the issuance of a search warrant. The defense, through their attorneys, Myron G. Ehriich and John H. Burnett, established proof that they did not make the sale and also that they were not in possession of the apartment or the liquor seized. The alleged attempt of & woman to | prevent a United States marshal, armed | with & writ of restitution, from suc- | ceeding in his effort to dispossess her | caused her to be arralgned in Police Court yesterday charged with assault. | Mrs. Blanche Witham, 58 years old, | of the 2100 block of Pennsylvania | avenue Is said to have failed to pay a ' slight portion of the rent and her land- | lord through court action secured the | writ which ordered her out of her | home. United States Marshal William | T. McClosky appeared at her door and | attempted to explain to Mrs. Witham | the cause of his visit. | Mrs. Witham would not allow him to | enter and it was necessary for Mc- | Closky to break a panel in the door. | When he entered Mrs. Witham is said | to have struck him with a plece of iron | pipe, but did not injure him. This was taken from her, but Mrs. Witham | is alleged to have seized a large file | and attempted to again strike the mar- | shal. This also was taken and Police- man W. B. Hopkins of the third pre- cinct placed the woman under arrest. Judge Gus A. Schuldt in Police Court yesterday was informed the Women's Bureau wished to find a suitable home for Mrs. Witham and suspended sen- tence of $100 or 60 days.
