VESTRIS WITNESS HITS SHIP LOADING Hoboken Methods Haphaz- ard, Opinion of Vauban Former First Officer. By the Associated Press. LONDON, May 9.—Criticism of the | way ships are loaded at Hoboken, N. J., ' was voiced by Stephen Chester Southam, former first officer of the steamship ‘Vauban, sister ship of the ill-fated Ves- | tris, at today's resumption of testimony | at the Board of Trade inquiry into the | Vestris disaster. | Southam, who was called to the stand by E. D. Digby, representing the officers | of the Vestris, ‘said that he had held 8 | master's certificate since July, 1924. He had been Lamport & Holt service since August, 1919, and was experienced in the manner in which ships were loaded at Hoboken. Asked 1f the loading was done satis- factorily from a sailor’s point of view as regards weight, Southam sald: “I don't think so. I consider that cargo is put in the ship in a careless, | haphazard sort of manner and there | seems to be no consizeration at all as to | the way they put weights in a ship. | ‘They are liable to put heavy weights on top and lighter weights down below just . as it slrlkz's them at the time the cargo comes along.” He added that they were loading the | Vestris quite up to the last minute. At the resumption of the hearing to- day G. P. Langton, representing the owners, said that he understood wit~ nesses were to be called who would make allegations against the owners and he suggested that while one was giving evidence the others should be out of the courtroom. It was agreed that it was desirable for the witnesses concerned to leave the court. | g o= TWO ZONING CHANGES APPROVED BY BOARD| Prince Georges Officials Put 0. K..| on Shifts to Comniercial Sections. By a Staff Correspondent of The Star. UPPER MARLBORO, Md., May 9.— Concurring with the recommendations | of the Maryland-National Capital Park | and Flanning Commission, the Prince Georges County Commmlonns ‘Tues- day approved two requests for zoning changes and disapproved one at the zoning hearing period of their weekly meeting. The petmom approved are those of | James A. Davis, 327 Elm avenue, Ta- koma Park, for nwnlng of lot 25, ‘block A, Takoma Park, from residential to commercial, and of Thomas Smith for rezoning of lots 9, 10, 11, 12 and 13, block D, Hayne's subdivision of Seat Pleasant, from residential to com- mercial. The petition of the Pittsburg Oil Co. of Wilmington, Del,, for reclassification of one-fourth acre along the Annapolis Highway near the Baltimore & Ohin Railroad tracks at Bladensburg from commercial to industrial, was disap- proved, it being explained that the oil eompany wished to erect gasoline! tanks on the property and this num' be ' permissable under commercial zoning. Lieut. Golden Resigns. The President has accepted the resig- nation of First Lieut. Edward R. Golden, United States Infantry, stationed at Jefferson Barracks, Mo. Lieut. Golden | is from Michigan, served in the Worldl War and was commissioned in Regular Army in July, 1820. ADVERTISEMENT. FEW WEEKS’ TRIAL PROVED VALUE OF THIS MEDICINE FOUND IT TO BE SATIS- FACTORY IN EVERY WAY, SO SHE RECOM. MENDS MILLER’S HERB EXTRACT TO ALL HER FRIENDS. H 1t only took & few weeks for this || great medicine to prove to Mrs. J. HAWKINS, 1228 C St. SW., inat it was a preparation of exceptional merit and really brings relier where other so-called remedies fail MRS. A. J. HAWKINS 1 Mrs. Hawkins has lived in Wash- ington for the past 20 years. giving her statement a few days ago she said: “Most of my trouble was caused from chronic constipation, and while I had used about every laxative I knew of, none of them zave me any relief to speak of. My stomach was bloated or swollen, due to gas that formed after I ate my meals. I had pains across the back, would get up at night on account of the kidneys, had severe headaches and also pains in my side and around the heart. Then, too, I was troubled at times with rheumatic neins in my knee. Some time ago L began using this medicine and have found it to be just as adver- tds and in the few weeks I have it I have found it to be satis- in every way. It is fine for || ation, and one good thing me I found I had to reduce |, the se instead of taking more. My stomach is in good shape, food now agrees with me and the rheu- matic pains, as well as the other pains, are gone. As I said before, I have found MILLER'S HERB EXTRACT to be satisfactory in every way and feel as though I can gafely recammend it to my friends :nd others.” The names and ad- esses of thousands of others who use and praise this famous medicine will be furnished on request. You don't need any pills with this medi- cine; it is a real medicine within itself, and guaranteed to give re- sults. A medicine you can take three or four bottles without seeing any result is not much medicine. See the special representative direct from the laboratories at his head- ouarters at PEOPLES DRUG STORE No. 3, 505 7th St. N.W., where he is now introducing and explaining the merits of this great nature tonic laxative.
