NEW YORK, May 9.—Resistance to the high rates for money which has been shown by high-grade bonds recent- ly gave way today, with the call rate renewing at 14 per cent and time loans approaching the maximum figure of the | year. Dealers are again showing discourage- ment over the outlook. after having had | a brief period of rising prices and some reduction in their inventories. The losses in the high-grade list were | small. This was due to the fact that there was no effort made to force bonds on the market. The legal issues are now off from one to two points from ' the quotations reached in the late April rise. There is about the same amount of decline in the second-grade rails, such as St. Paul gold 58, Erie refunding ! 58, Rock Island 413s, Prisco 4135, New Haven 4138, Texas Pacific 5s and Great ‘Western 4s. r A few of the public utilities moved against the general trend, among them Duquesne Light 4'zs, which rose to par, and Columbia Gas & Electric 5s, which advanced 15, after declining 2 | points from their recent high. The convertibles naturally follo the stock market. As ghat was weal they also declined. International Tele- phone 4'4s dropped 2 points and American Telephone 4155 a point. The American I. G. Chemical 5gs, which went to about par yesterday, sold at 103 and then declined 1l2 points. The local tractions were generally bet- ‘There was more activity than for some time in Remington Rand 555 at higher prices. ‘The opposition that has developed in England the tentative terms of the war debt settlement cast a shadow over the market for foreign issues and checked such rising tendencies as had been observed there earlier in the week. There continues to be slow but per- sistent liquidation in issues that came out late last year and have never been fully distributed. United States Gov- ernment securities were heavy. Today's new offerings included a $9.- 000,000 issue of the Gulf States Utili- ties first mortgage 5s at what the trade regarded as an attractive price in con- trast’ to prices on other new issues, and additional amounts of New Jersey mu- nicipals where the early maturities could be had between a 5 and 5's per cent basis. | POTATO MARKET STEADY. Municipal Fish Market this morning was the scene of unusual activity, fish | being plentiful and cheap and buyers more numerous than usual. Boatloads of trout from points on Chesapeake Bay and lower Potomac River suggested to merchants scenes of years ago when shad and herring were reteived in such large quantities. The trout were so plentiful that the small ones were of- fered as low as 5 cents a pound, larger ones selling at 12 cents Catfish from Polomac River seines and croakers from bay and river points also were so plentiful that they were offered at 5 cents a pound. Eels and carp. received with the catfish, were offered at 12 and 10 cents, respectively. White perch, also caught in the seines, | were offered at 7 cents for small stock and 15 cents for the larger fish. Crabs in Supply. Roe shad, weighing about 4> or 5 pounds, were offered at 60 cents; bucks, weighing about 3 pounds, selling at 35 cents. Shad roe was quoted from 50 | to 75 cents. Bluefish were scarce at 25 cents and there were fairly heavy receipts of rcckfish at 30 cents. Prices | of other fish were quoted as follow Haddock, 8: fillet of haddock, 15: hali- but, 25; salmon, 20; Boston mackerel, 18; cod, 1215: flounders, 5 to 10, and red snappers, 25 Hard crabs supplies at $6 a_barrel, soft crabs sell- ing from $1 to $2 a dozen. Dealers had several grades of crabmeat to offer the trade this morning, the choice Missis- sippi product selling at 60 cents. Other grades of the meat, mostly from Hamp- ton, Va., and Crisfield, Md., sold at 25, 35 and 50 cents. | “"Lobsters were 50 cents a pound, shrimp sold at 30 cents and frogs were | quoted at $4 a dozen. Clams were scarce at $2 per 100. Strawberries continue in supply. The wet weather has retarded the ripening of the fruit and some of it does not possess the rich red color of the best stock. Choicest berrfes sold as high as 85 and $5.50 a crate this morning, ordinary stock selling as low as $2. Dealers had heavy supplies of most vegetables from nearby and distant places, prices being what they termed reasonable to cheap. Prices of most commodities this morning were sub- stantiplly the same as those quoted yesterday. Today’s Wholesale Prices—Jobbers Prices Slightly Higher. Shaped like a candle-snuffer, Pharaoh’s Pschent was a combination of the crowns of the two kingdoms. By arms and guile, this Pharaoch— once ruler only of lower Egypt—had seized control of the rich upper king- dom, and united the wealth of the two countries. You don’t have to use arms and guile, but you have a salary—you can secure domination over the two kingdoms of Capital and Interest. A part of your salary, placed in a sav- ings fund invested in the First Mort- gage Notes offered through Swartzell, Rheem & Hensey Company, will give you unfailing security—and will pay you 6% interest, in two vearly in- stallments, backed by our record of over SIXTY YEARS WITHOUT LOSS TO AN INVESTOR.
