Once he saw two or three riding on their mother’s back. Life seemed to be all fun for those little Ducklings. ONCE— HE SAW TWO OR THREE RIDING ON THEIR MOTHER'S BACK. “They ought to be learning some- thing instead of just wasting their time " said Peter to Beauty, their “That is no way to bring chil- dren up.” Beauty didn't say a word. But he did chuckle a little. Yes, sir, he chuckled a little. He szemed quitc sat- isfied with matiers as they were. You see, he was very wisely leaving every- thing to Mrs. Wood Duck. As for Mrs. Wood Duck, she seemed very well satis- fied with the way the children behaved. | “My dears,” said she wien they took | their first swirh, “you may play about | as much as you please, but be sure never fo get very far from me. The| note from Mrs. Wood Duck the 12 little Ducklings obediently swam close to her. Then she led them on their first jour- ney out into the Great World, which really wasn't much of a journey, al- though it seemed so to them. It was simply a little trip along the shore of Paddy’s pond. Presently Mrs. Wood Duck went ashore and the Ducklings began to hunt for things to eat along the edge of the water, They found some seeds and they found green stuff good to eat. Now and then one would find a grub or a worm. Sometimes two would spy it at the same time and there would be a +| rush to see who could get it. Whenever one of them strayed too far Mrs. Wood Duck would give that warning little note and instantly all those little Duck- lings would come running to her. Finally she thought they had played enough and called them in. When they had gathered close to her she began a new play. “I see something that looks like the end of a black stick out in the water,” said she. “I wonder which of you will see it first.” Immediately 2ll the little Ducklings began to look. 1 see it!” cried one. “I see it!” cried langther, Finally the last one had seen ““Now watch it,” said Mother Wood K. cK. So_the little Ducklings watched and watched and made a regular game of it. And then, right in the midst of it, that black thing disappeared. “I’s gone!” cried one little Duck- ling. “Do you think you would know it if you saw it again?” asked his mother. The little Duckling was sure he would know it. His brothers and sisters were also sure they would know it. “That's good,” said Mother Wood Duck. “If you all really know it, you will pever be caught by it.” “How could it catch us?” cried two or three Ducklings together. “How wise Duckling eats while it plays, so|could a stick catch us?” ‘while you are learning to be at home in the water you may as well be getting something to eat at the same time. Do “That wasn't a stick,” replied Mother Wood Duck. “That was the head of Snapper the Turtle, and he is very, very you see all those little wiggly things in the water? They are very good eat- fond of young Ducks.” (Copyright, 1929.) The Daily Cross-Word Puzzle (Copyrizht. 1929.) . Sanctuary. . Rapidly. . A fastening. . Wickedness. . Ancient Greek physician. .
