Although a .32 caliber pistol bullet h lodged in each of his lungs, Charles | Albert Brown had shown so much im- provement that Emergency Hospital physicians last night predicted his re- | covery unless unforescen compucauum set in. Brown was shot Friday by his wife, | who opened fire on him when they met in a corridor in the Police Court Build- | ing. Both the husband and the WME | are 40 years old. The progress made by the victim, v\hn was conceded only a remote chance to | live when taken to the hospital after the shooting, has astonished physicians. One of the bullets entered the right lung after tearing through his arm, and the other was fired through the left side of his chest. He has escaped hem- orrhages, and, when visited by a re- porter 24 hours after the shooting, sat up in bed, smoked a cigarette and con- versed in a cheerful manner. Brown said yesterday he did not hold | his wife entirely to blame for the shoot- ing, and expressed the belief that “an- other woman” was largely responsible. | _The wife showed her anxiety over Brown's condition yesterday, question- ing her visitors for any news of him. Mrs. Brown said she fired at her hus- band when Mrs. Lililan Johnson, whom | she accuses of associating with Brown, laughed at her as they were leaving the court. She said “something snapped” | inside when the other woman laughed, | and that she did not know what she was doing. Mrs. Johnson and Brown were co- defendants against charges of a statu- tory offense, preferred by Mrs. Brown. The shooting followed a postponement of the case yesterday, the fourth since the arrest was made over a year ago. Mrs. Brown said the strain brought on by the numerous postponements partly was_responsible for her overwrought condition. They have two children, who are being cared for by relatives. Detroit Federation President Is Acquitted of Extortion Charge. DETROIT, February 2 (#).—Frank X. Martel, president of the Detroit Fed- eration of Labor, today was acquitted of a charge of extorting $500 from Manuel Jacoby, president of a cleaning and dyeing firm here. Martel was accused of having de- manded the money under threat of calling a strike in Jacoby’s plant during a recent cleaners and dyers’ war. A check for $500 presented as evidence by Jacoby was accepted, Martel claimed, as damages for the stench bombing of his home in 1926, for which he held Charles Jacoby, brother of Manuel, re- sponsible. cmrgu against Martel grew out of testimony given during the trial of nine members of the alleged “purple gang” who were charged $with con- spl‘\;ucv in connection with the cleaners Sur- @ards of Thanks.
