10 NEW TYPE PLANE BULT FOR TRAINING Craft, Anchored to Ground, Gives “Feel” of Ship to Embryo Pilots. A new type of “primer plane” for teaching prospective Army pilots the rudiments of flying without danger to themselves or others has been per- fected at the Army Air Corps materiel division laboratories, Wright Field, | Dayton, Ohio, the War Department has ; announced. The “plane,” although firmly an- chored to the solid earth, simulates all of the noises, discomforts and actions of a real plane and is said to be the best means_ yet developed for teaching | a student the first handling of an air- plane’s controls. The device consists of a fuselage | body with rudder, elevator and aileron control surfaces. These surfaces are fully movable under the operation of standard airplane controls and the plane itself has a tractor propeller driven by a 15-horsepower electric mo- tor, which gives the effect of a slip- stream and propeller blast. Mounted on Tripod 20 Feet High. The pléne is mounted on a double tripod frame 20 feet high, this height giving a sence of dissociation with the ground and a certain amount of horizon perspective. While the stu- dent becomes familiar with the fea- tures of flying that at first are apt to be confusing—the blast of air, the tacket of the propeller and the rock- ing, tipping motions of flight, he also #s becoming used to the response of | actual fying. controls. With his feet on the rudder bar and the control stick in hand, the student can cause the plane to assume any po- sition' an airplane takes in flight and can get the feel of the controls and the different movements of the plane. An instrument board equipped with @ompass, clock, tachometer, air speed ndicator, inclinometer, bank and turn indicator and other standard flight in- struments -enables him to form the habit of automatic reference to the board in all attitudes of flight. Instructors May Observe Him. The instructor is able to observe closely the student’s reactions and his natural adaptability to flying. If he notes some fault in manipulation of | the controls or wishes to demonstrate | a point he may stop the “plane” at any time for directions or explana- tions. By placing a hood over the student's head, shutting off the horizon, sky and ground, blind flying may be taught by having the student recover from vari- ous attitudes back to normal by instru- ment reference only. “A final advantage of the primer plane,” it was stated in a message from Wright Field, “will be its low cost of construction in comparison with other forms of equilibrators. This will make it possible for ' National Guard, Air Corps Reserve and other such organiza- tions to obtain them, no doubt, and to give their fiyers the benefit of this pre- liminary instruction.” PLAY TOURNAMENT SPURS COMPETITORS Third Annual Contest in District Scheduled From February 11 to February 27.
