" ADVANCE N STOCK PRCES CONTINES Vigorous Buying in Rails Again Features Market. Profit-Taking Absorbed. By the Associated Press. NEW YORK, February 2.—The stock market ran into moderate week end selling today, but operations for the advance were maintained at a strong pace, centering in the chemicals and the rails. Nearly a dozen of the latter reached new high prices for the third successive day. v Buying of rails was further stimulat- ed by announcement that the Balti- more & Ohio would proceed independ- ently with the Eastern trunk line con- solidation _plans, endeavoring to ac- | quire the Reading and the Jersey Cen- tral, The fact that the month-end re- quirements were met with the slightest strain on_ credit since the end of Oc- tober, call money going no higher than 8 per cent, .helped speculative con- fidence. The ease in.time money. and the drop in several foreign currencies to the point where imports of gold be- come profitable were also bullish fac- to! TS, A favorable over-night news develop- ment was the appointment by & group of ofl executives meeting at Tulsa of an umpire of oil and gas conservation, who will call a general meeting of pro- ducers next week, but this apparently did not hold definite enough promsie of improvement to inspire buying of the oil_shares. St. Louis Southwestern jumped 9 points and Unfon Pacific mounted nearly 5 to record prices. Pittsburgh & West Virginia and Western Maryland advan( 4 points each to new tops on unconflil reports . that the Taplin interests Were preparing to take defi- nite steps toward consolidating the two roads.- Baltimore & Ohio and Reading mounted about 2 points each, and Jer- sey Central jumped 20 points to a new high at 350. Baltimore Markets Special Dispatch to The Star. BALTIMORE, Md., February 2.—The live poultry market continues steady to firm under generally light receipts of desirable stock and & good demand pre- vailing, especially for fat, smooth young chickens and medium sized hen turkeys. Many of the arrivals, however, consist of small, -poor, thin fowl, for which there is little outlet, even at the low values quoted for this class of -stock. 106': 104% Amer Agri Chem 7%s '41 89% 86 Amer Beet Sugar 6 . 102 100% Am Smelt & Ref st 5847 104% 104 Am Sugar Ref 65 1937.. 99% 991X Am Tel & Tel cl tr 4s'29. 105% 1041 Amer Tel & Tel s 58 ... 8515 8219 Amer Writ Pap 6: 105% 105 Anaconda Cop 6s 19 206 187 Anacondacvdeb 78’3 92% 91 Armour & Co 412539 92'4 90% Armour of Del 5384 102% 100% Atlantic Ref deb 5s'37 142's 132 Barnsdall Corp 6s 1940, 105% 104% Bell Tel (Pa) ref s '48. 102 100 Bethl Steel p m 5s1936.. 101 105% 104 Beth Steelsf6s'4S... 105 96 94% Chile Copper 3s (1947).. 98 119% 110 Colon Oil 6s 1938 . 73% 69% Con Coal (Md) 1st ref 5s 80 77% Cuba Cane Sug cvdeb8s 108% 107 Detroit Edison ref 68'40. 1041 1021 ‘Dodge 65 1940 95% 921 East Cuban Sug 714s'37. 103% 102% Gen Motors 6s 1937. 108% 107 - Goodrich (B'F) 613847, 102% 100% Humble Oil & R 578 '3: 1056 102% Indiana Steel 5s 19 116% 109% Inter Cement 58’48 98% 97! Soft-meated young chickens are finding ready sale as well as large capons, but these are the only two lines in dressed poultry which will bring a premjum over live. Tre market for native and nearby eggs has been unsettled the fi;st week. and values show a slight decline. Re- ceipts have been fairly liberal, but de- mand continues good ahd all well graded, new-laid eggs meet with ready sale, but mixed stocks as well as small, undersized eggs are generally slow sale and in many instances have to be dis- counted. The market closed today at 38a38!2 a dozen for firsts in free cases and 32a 361, for current receipts. Receipts of white potatoes continue only moderate from all sections and the market holds steady with values show- ing no change from last week. For well graded round stock there is a good movement, but ungraded, mixed po- tatoes have to be sold at the lower Ences quoted. Round potatoes are ringing 1.20a1.35 per 100 pounds, but McCormicks and reds will not bring over 1.00a1.10, while 150-pound sacks sell mostly 1.7522.25, as to size. Mar- ket for sweet potatoes and yams holds firm under moderate receipts and de- mand good for clean, medium sized stock, but most of the arrivals consist of oversized, dark, rough stock which is hard to sell, while No. 2s and culls will not bring enough to pay freight. Vol- ume of sales during the month was slightly smaller than a year previous. Of the individual lines, women’s cloth- ing and boots and shoes showed the largest decreases in comparison with Decemiber, 1927, while the largest in. creases were in the sales of drugs and furniture. Figures for the year as a whole show that sales of wholesalers in 1928 were six-tenths of 1 per cent smaller than in 1927. Al lines of trade reported des creases except groceries, meats and drugs. PARIS, February 2—World control of zine production by a recently formed international cartel already is sta- bilizing ' the industry, say French authorities. While there is no direct price fixing on the cartel's program, it is planned to keep the price from drop- ping below $135 a ton by reducing out- t. wl‘uropenn producers, who represented 62 per cent of world production before the war and only 48 per cent now, formed a group of their own early last year, but joined American, Mexican, Canadian and Australian interests in an agreement last December. Produc- tion and, exports are regulated by this agreement, which was for six months and subject to renewal. It is described as a rather loose working t, without a central authority, each group of nations enforcing its own discipline. At present in the cartel proper are France, Germany, Belglum, Holland, Great Britain, Poland, Italy and Australia. The United States and {Canada are represented as having agreed not to block the cartel’s limita~ tion of production nor to profit by it to develop exports.
