FINANCIACL. SPECULATIVEBOND SSUES AEACTE Trading Featured by Demand for Convertibles—Other Issues Lag. BY CHARLES F. SPEARE. Special Dispatch to The Star. NEW YORK, December 19.—A large | part of the transactions in bonds today was in issues that have a speculative character. These were mainly higher. | Strictly mortgage bonds were dull, and distinguished by the widening margin between bid and asked prices. At this time of the year there is like- 1y to be liquidation by dealers who have carried bonds along for some time and are desirous of taking either their * profits or their losses before they make their inventories. This is having some effect on the present market, over which are hanging a number of fairly good sized blocks of corporation, mu- nicipal and foreign government issues. The money situation does not favor buying by the institutions except ab prices well under those on the list. These conditions may be cleared up in the next two weeks, or may continue until & cefinitely improved money situ- ation becomes visible between the mid- dle and end of January. Today's prices for high-grade issues showed little change. Some of them were up a fraction; others down, de- pending primarily on the supply. A rise of & quarter point in United States Liberty 31,s was an ‘unusual feature of the Government market, which has been heavy recently. The last issues of 41, per cent Treasury certificates are both off a quarter on the bid side and selling to yield around 4%, per cent. Bolivian issues were stronger, the 8s up 1'% points and the unlisted 7s back | to 93 after touching 85 Monday. Among the other South American bonds there were numerous small losses and a few gains. Italian issues were distinctly heavy, especially the municipals, with City of Milan 615s at the lowest of the year and on about a 7! per cent basis. Electric Power of Germany 6l2s also touched a new low for 1928. French municipals showed a good rally. Japanese descriptions were heavy. The copper convertibles again led their section of the market with Ana- conda 7s up over 5 points and Andes 78 4 points. International Cement 5s were quite active above 105, Loews 6s gained 2!, points and Barnsdall 6s, 2 points, International Telephone 41is mh}l fractionally above their previous The feature of the speculative rails was the decline in Seaboard Air Line Florida division 6s of 4 points to the lowest of the year, which was 29 points under the year's best. This affected the older Seaboard issue First Mortgage Loans Norway 6%s 1952, Reccived by Private Wire UNITED STATES, (Saiae are (o $:.000.) Sales. High. Low. Dealers had *| poultry to offer the retail trade, but PLENTIFUL TURKEY SUPPLY PROMISED Dealers Say Plenty of Birds Will Be on Hand for Holiday. Retailers making purchases of sup- plies this morning continued to make anxious inquiries as to the probable | prices that are likely to prevail in the turkey market later in the weck and the eve of Christmas. They have been assured by wholesalers that there need be no fear as to the supply of the king fowl for the Christmas market, “ealizing prices will depend upon supply, demand and weather conditions. Local dressing plants already have begun operations, wholesalers realizing that shipments of live turkeys will be heavier than usual should the weather conditions continue as during recent days. Complaint is made that many turkeys received this week have been of the thin or undesirable stock, some being too thin for street hucksters to Prepare for Market. ‘This morning wholesalers had coops of live turkeys piled high on sidewalks in front of their places of business, most of them to be killed in their own dressing plants, although in numerous instances, it is stated, sales of live turkeys were made to grocers. Turkey raisers in nearby Maryland and Virginia and States a little more distant today are dressing their tur- keys for the local market or starting shipments of live turkeys, and dealers this morning predicted turkeys will be so plentiful that prices will drop and also that there will be large quanti- ties left over when the market closes Monday night. Many grocers announced the taking of orders for Christmas turkeys at 50 cen's a pound, guaranteeing top qual- ers this morning who predicted a re- tail market below that price, some suggesting that the close of the market will find prices at 45 cents or less. Government, reports from Fort Worth, Tex., told of prices prevailing there Monday. Prices of young toms were re- ported steady at 22 and 23 cents, hens selling at 18 and 20 cents. Old foms were quoted at 15, No. 2s selling as low as 10 and 12': cents. It is now too late to start shipments from Texas to markets in this section, however, shipments from there already being on the way. Live turkeys here were offered at 35 and 37 cents this morning, dressed stock large quantities of chickens and other the demand was only for turkeys. Rab- bits also continued plentiful. in the fruit and vegetable markets, prices continued without much change, and butter, egg and meat prices also were substantially the same as prices quoted yesterday. NEW YORK, December 19 (Special). —Practically all important market cen- ters report this year's Christmas holi- day trade to be exceptionally good, Hardware Age will say tomorrow in its weekly market summary. The Yuletide season finds American workmen well employed and the agricultural districts in a prosperous condition. Large sums of money recently released by the in- creasingly popular Christmas clubs are having their effect upon the hardware trade. Jobbers and manufacturers are taxed to the utmost to fill orders. As the year draws to a close, the in- dications are that 1928 will show a favorable total business when compared with previous years. The outlook for continued good business during the Winter months is encouraging, as the present industrial fabric is sound. Prices are continuing firm and fairly steady. What changes are noted are tending to slight advances. Collections are fair, SPINNING ACTIVITIES. The Census Bureau's report today on cotton spinning activities for November showed active spindle hours for the month totaled 8,524,399,388, or an aver- age of 211 hours per spindle in place. Spinning spindles in place November 30 totaled 35,373,996 of which 30,596,840 were operated some time during the month, compared with 30,315,086 for October this year, and 32,314,114 for November last year. ‘The average number of spindles op- erated during November was 38,232,864.
