12 MNATURESTRAE LONDON' HSTORY Architect’s Model Maker Works Miracles With Copies of Famous Scenes. BY JOAN LITTLEFIELD, Correspondent of The Star and the North American Newspaper Alliance. LONDON, December 19.—I stepped back into the past not long ago and saw London burn—the red-gabled, tim- bered London of narrow, winding streets, the London Pepys knew and described so0_vividly in his diary. The evening sun glinted on the river, touching with gold the four turrets of the Tower and burnishing with ominous red the square tower of old St. Paul's. Then it grew dark. The moon rose, and presently in the east a flicker of flame | threw into sudden relief the serried dwelling houses of Pudding Lane. ‘Whole Street Ablaze. Soon the whole street was on fire and the roaring, tearing, crackiing terror rushed ever nearer and nearer to the gray security of old St. Paul's. The wcy was easy, the wooden buildings yielding with hardly a murmur to the fury of the fire, and before its progress could be checked that square tower had fallen forever into the street. * * * The flame flickered and died down, and the pleasant, white-haired gentle- man at my side switched on the elec- tric light. I realized with a start that this was the twentieth century and that I was standing in the upper room of an office in London. The man at my side, John B. Thorp was the worker of the miracle. His real Kvb is to make architects’ models, but is hobby is to reconstruct old London for the present generation. “It is the finest way of learning his- tory at a glance,” he said. “With this model and a good lecturer, for instance, one can find out more about the great | fire of 1666 in a quarter of an hour than it is possible to learn from a year's study of the books of the period.” Has Model of Bridge. Mr. Thorp then showed me a large model of old London Bridge, complete in every detail, from the diamond-paned windows to the quaint Elizabethan houses that used to flank the bridge on either side to the large, boat-shaped piles on which it stood. This model, one of the most elaborate ever made (every room in every house can be il'1- minated), took about 6,000 hours to build. In another corner of the room Mr. Lady's Liamond Rin, g A large diamond somely made mounting. In the | middle of the scene stood a beautiful | woman tied to the stake, while a ruf- fian heaped the wood on the already glowing mass at her feet. It appeared | that the lady in distress was paying Lhe price for having poisoned her hus- and. Mr. Thorp, who hopes to hold an exhibition of his models in London next year, told. me that this hobby of his means a great deal of research work. | He recently discovered in Fishmongers' Hall some old prints of the lord From these he | mayor’s show of 1616. ol is reconstructing the pageant in minia- ture as it passed through Cheapside. He has in his workshop, for instance, a finger pillory, an exact copy of those used 200 years ago for imprisoning willful servants when they quarreled with each other or refused to work. Ten minutes of this punishment was generally enough to make the girls beg to be allowed to Teturn to their pots and pans. There also is a full-sized duplicate of Guy Fawkes' lantern, a rack on which men and women were-tortured, and a sinister instrument, something like a small pair of tongs, used for putting out people’s eyes, Mr. Thorp reconstructs street accl- dents for the edification of puzzied juries, ‘The scene of the accident is built up in exact facsimile, even to the smallest bush, and tiny models of the vehicles concerned are used to demon: strate how the collision occurred.
