C, WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 19, 1928. STOCKS ARE HIGHER INBRISK TRADING Buying Becomes More Confi- dent—Coppers Lead in Advance. BY GEORGE T. HUGHES. Special Dispatch to The Star. NEW YORK, December 19.—Still under a limited turnover, but with in- asing confidence, the stock market hed ahead today into new high ground on the current recovery. time or another nearly every group of industrials participated in the im- provement and at intervals selected rails were taken pp. Money held at 7 per cent all day. The coppers featured the trading just before the close. Granby Consolidated was the favorite. Under an enormous turnover the stock ran up sharply to much the highest price. Expectations of a substantial increase in the dividend was the basis for the demand. The list started in strong under the influence of the demonstration in the last hour yesterday. It was pretty well established that forced liquidation had been completed, while the short interest had been growing. This, combined with the relative ease in day to day loans, encouraged the so-called constructive | element and they proceeded to make the most of their opportunity. Copper Stocks In Demand. Copper stocks were right up at the mmtppe Greene Cananea, Which had been forging ahead all during the ir- regularity of last week, pushed through 174 to a new high for all time. Inter- national Nickel, which moves with the coppers, likewise established a new rec- ord top, above 260. Kennecott, above 140, was some 12 points up from the low in the break of ten days ago. American Smelting & Refining, a_vecent laggard, jumped 5 points, probably influenced by earnings estimates given out in connec- tion with the recapitalization plan. Chile, Cerro de Pasco, Anaconda and Calumet and Arizona went along. More significant from the standpoint of the bull party was the better feeling toward U. S. Steel, which, in other ses- slons of late, has been slow to respond. General Motors came along moderately, while Chrysler and Packard, still leaders of the independents, were both substan- tially higher. Among _the industrial speclalties Carbon, Commercial Solvents and A. M. Byers were all active and strong. ‘Montgomery Ward added four points to Tuesday’s gain. An over-extended short interest in General Railway Signal was forced to cover at higher prices. Porto Rican American - Tobacco shares fea- tured that part of the list. Rails were firm. St. Louis South- western ran up three points easily. Erie was the favorite of the non-dividend payers. Delaware & Hudson gaired on a small turnover. Money renewed at 7 per cent, but was in supply at that rate. In the so-called outside market accommodation was ob- tainable at 812 per cent. The situation was quite different in time money. Here rates were at the high of the move- ment and funds were in scant supply. Traders, however, paid no attention to anything except the charge for day-to- day loans. They had heard so much about a money squeeze over me year- end, and development of which they saw.no immediate sign, that the pred!c- tions of trouble ahead no longer had any effect. .
