WICHITA FALLS, Tex., December 7. —Federal Judge W. H. Atwell of Dallas, whose harsh treatment of liquor law violators is known to Brooklyn, N. Y., where he occupied a Federal bench last Summer, stopped his court here yester- ;| day to write a letter orderfng an in- vestigation of alleged graft by two Fed- eral prohibition agents of Fort Worth. Mrs. Rickey Ketchum, charged with selling liquor, created a sensation when she asserted that she had paid agents named Logsdon and Beck $875 to pro- tect her place of business. Without leaving the bench Judge At- well called for writing materials and prepared and dispatched a letter to the United States district attorney’s office at Fort Worth asking him to look into the allegation. Mrs. Ketchum then was given a year and a day in prison and fined $500. Advices from Fort Worth sald that George A. Hammons, deputy prohibition administrator, declared both men, W. B. Logsdon and J. H. Beck, left the service October 15, but that an investi- gation would be made. Judge Atwell startled liquor law vio- lators in New York metropolitan areas earlier this year by the stiff sentences | and fines he handed, out. NEW YORK, December 7.—A for- mer Government patrol boat that had turned rum runner was tied up at the Battery yesterday, the prize of the Coast Guard, captured after she had been damaged by gun fire. ‘The Coast Guard cutter 165 stumbled upon the craft Wednesday morning in the fog off Port Jefferson, Long Island. She fled when hailed and the cutter turned its machine gun on her. Her pilot house was sprayed with bullets, but she did not stop until a 1-pound shot was sent crashing through the stern. ‘The guardsmen found the craft loaded with 25 barrels of mash and 900 cases of whisky. Five men found aboard were arrested. Coast guardsmen indentified the craft as a former patrol boat which had been sold several months ago. She had been renamed the Porpoise. PULITZER, IR, TO WED.
