NEW MOV SEE ON EPARATONS Naming of Commitiee of Ex- | perts Foreshadowed in Re- ply to German Note. Dy the Associated Press. PARIS, December 7.—Confidence is | expressed in official circles in Paris that | a new committee of reparations experts Wil we appointed before the end of the | year despite delay in the renly by the entente powers to the latest German | note on the matter. | It s stated that Germany's position ! regarding the political aspects of the | negotiations will have no bearing on the | work of the experts, which in no sense will be considered here as final or as| binding on the governments. S. Parker Gilbert, agent general for reparations, | went over all the remaining details with Premier Poincare while here re- cently and it is understood that the two men are in full accord. Board to Meet in Paris. ‘The impression now is that the ex- perts will be called to meet in Paris, but will be left free to go anywhere they like after they have organized their | work. It is supposed that they will want to sit part of the time at least in Berlin, where valuable information collected at Mr. Gilbert's headquarters | will be conveniently available. | ‘The reports of the experts, however, likely will be brought up in Paris, since the committee is the creation of the reparations commission, whose official | headquarters are here. Premier Poin- care and Foreign Minister Briand told | the foreign affairs committee of the Chamber of Deputies today that the first phase of the negotiations provided for at Geneva is purely the work of the experts. Decisions Not Binding. They will be independent of the gov- | ernments as desired by Germany, but | it is understood all around that their | decisions will not bind the government. | Both the premier and the foreign min- ister said that the negotiations opened under favorsble conditions and give hope for success. The premier declared that if the Ger- man reparations annuities were reduc- ed in number below 62, then it would be necessary for France to raise the question of an eauivalent reduction in war debts. But he anticipated that the ‘question would not be raised in connection with reparations negotia- tions. STAGE PRODUCTION IS HELD T0O COSTLY | Producer Will Use London as Ex- perimental Base for All Future Plays. By the Associated Press. NEW YORK., December 7.—Gilbert Miller, theatrical producer, in an- nouncing _that hereafter he will produce all big plays in London, said the margin of profit in play pro- duction has shrunk to such an extent that four out of five must succeed if the producer would escape bankruptcy. He will produce no more plays on the ‘American st but will select the suc- cessful ones from among his Léndon plays and them over here for presentation with the London settings. In this way he hopes to avold the *“useless labor costs,” to which he large- 1y attributed the difficulties, of y 11 by tui:nposlbl ‘was al ul le. By the Associated Press. INDIANAPOLIS, December 7.—De- partment commanders and sadjutants of the American Legion from every State in the Union were present yester- day for the opening of the annual con- ference in the national headquarters here. Rehabilitation of disabled veterans was the chief topic for the first day of the three-day session. Paul V. McNutt of Bloomington, Ind., national commander, made the address of welcome. ‘The legislative program for the year, work of the Americanism division, child welfare and membership activities are subjects to be discussed at the sessions. oo ity Panaman Survey Scheduled. Man 83 Years Old Prepares Cemetery Lot and Ends Life By the Associated Press. DENVER, December 7.—Having prepared a lot in a Denver ceme- tery, complete even to a head- stone inscribed with the date of his birth, Harry F. Swanson, 83, pioneer of the old West, shot and killed himself here Wednesday. An old Western six-shooter, which he had cherished for many years and which more than once had saved his life in the hectic days of the early 80s at Empire, Colo., was the weapon he used to end his life. A former peace officer and known as a “dead” shot, the old man placed the heavy weapon to his body, pulled the trigger, and the bullet pierced his heart. The grave tha: he had pre- pared was next to the plot where his wife is burled. JEWEL SALESMAN ROBBED Representative of Chicago Firm Reports $30,000 Loss. CHICAGO, December 7 (#).—An- drew Sanche, salesman for a Chicago jewelry firm, told the police he had been robbed of jewelry valued at $30,000 by three men who held up his automo- bile in Cicero. He said they followed his automobile until he came to a stop light, when two men leaped into his machine and forced him to drive on, the second car following. The robbers forced him from his car and drove away in his machine, followed by the other car, he said.
