Not 1 SCIENCE UPHOLDS PUNISHENT RULE Tests Prove Students So Treated Attain Better Re- sults in Their Work. | By the Associated Press ST. LOUIS, November 22.—The old- time schoolmaster who used a rod to help his pupils along the road of learn- ing probably was merely conforming to the conventions of his time, but psy- chological experiments conducted by Dr. Marion E. Bunch at Washington University indicate that his methods had 4 sound scientific foundation. The experiments, for which 80 stu- | dents were enlisted as subjects, showed a distinct score in favor of “punish- ment” when not too severe. Divided into groups of 20 men and 20 women each, they were given the task of learning, at a single sitting, to move 2 metal stylus along the free path of a concealed maze consisting of grooves in a brass plate. Punished Show Best Results. One group was punished with elec- tric shocks for errors and its record was compared with that of the other group, which received no punishment. The blind alleys of the maze ended at plugs fixed in the grooves which were hooked up with a battery and could be made to produce the shock when touched with the stylus. Records also were kept of unpunishable errors, such 48 the retracement over a part or all of a section of the free pathway and the retreat from a blind alley after entering it. The students who were cubjected to punishment. it was found, achieved an 80 per cent score, having learned to move the stylus correctly through the maze four times out of five con- secutive trials, with only half as many trials on the average as those who had no such incentive, and in about 30 per cent less time. They were more cau- tious than the others, taking about 34 per cent more time for each trial, but they made 30 per cent fewer errors, the reduction being noticeable not only for those which brought a shock but for those which did not entail punish- ment. It was observed also that the difference in performance among in- dividuals in the punished group were m::h less marked than among the others. EARLY-SHOP DRIVE MOVES RAPIDLY HERE Management of Christmas Saving . Funds Gives Indication of Thrift in D. C. mpid growth of the early Christmas shopping mnvemem is indicated by changes by banks and other financial lumutlnns in the manage- ment of their Christmas saving funds, it was pointed out yesterday by Edward D. Shaw, secretary of the Merchants & Manufacturers’ Association, which is conducting a& mail early-shop early campaign. When the Christmas savings plan was inaugurated a few years ago, it was the custom to make annual dis- tribution of these funds on December 15, or even later, he pointed out. “This year the $8,000,000 in Christe mas savings accounts will be dis- tributed to depositors in Washington on December 1. he said. “That this method of saving for Christmas has | become popular is ghown by the fact ! that the Christmas savings funds have almost doubled in the past three years, $4,400,000 having been distributed in | 1925. One million forty-two thousand more has been .deposited this year than in 1927. Over $80,000 in interest is being paid on thase accounts by Wash- Ington banks. Eighty-three thousend people are participating in these Christ- wmas savings funds this year, an’ in- crease of 5,000 over last year and 27, 000 more than in 1925. “Bankers have been quick to respond to the demand of the depositors in these clubs for an earlier dstrlbuhon each yeat,” Mr. Shaw commented. depositors found that where dmrlhu- tion was delayed until December 15 or later they were losing the best of the Christmas shopping opportunities. Their money was not'available until the mer- chandise stocks in their city had been somewhat depleted, and they were forced to compete with the tremendous crowds which thronged the stores dur- ing the latter part of the Christinas shopping season.” KIDNAP CASE DELAYED.
