By the Associated Press. . NEW YORK, November 22.—The New | York World today says that “Cheerio,” the optimist of the radio, who recently was revealed as a friend of Herbert Hoover, is Charles K. Field of San Fran- cisco. The National Broadcasting Co. over whose WEAF network he has been | broadcasting good cheer every week day | morning at 8:30, had carefully guarded the secret of his identity the last year and a half. Mr. Field was a classmate of Hoover's at Leland Stanford in 1895, and more recently was co-author with Will Irwin of a Hoover biography. For years he was editor of Sunset Magazihe. Mr. Field donates his services for the daily programs and the broadcasting com- pany donates the time on the air. In- cidental expenses for clerical work and musical entertainment are met by the | American Child Health Association, of which Mr. Hoover is president. . STAR, WASHINGTON, PENN STATE BAND | 1S RADIO FEATURE Military Organization will| ! Broaccast Thanksgiving Eve for Fifth Time. When the Penn State Military Band of 75 men broadcasts from KDKA on Thanksgiving eve it will be the fifth consecutive annual program of its kind given from that station by the crack musical organization from the Centre | County institution. The this_appearance in 1924 es a feature of the Thanksgiving Penn State pro- gram in Pittsburgh, which includes the {annual foot ball game between Penn State and the University of Pittsburgh. The Penn State Band is recognized as one of the leading collegs bands of the country. Under the direction of Wilfred O. Thompson, U. S. A., band- | master, the Nitluny bandsmen have es- tablished an enviable reputation for their playing.. Mr. Thompson has been at the helm of the Blue and White Band organization for the past 12 years, and, although he some years back reached the age of retirement from Army service, he refused the opportunity and elected to stay on with "gis boys™ in the Nittany Valley. The broadcast will follow the annual alumni smoker. Starting at 11:05 o'clock, Eastern standard time, the Nittany players will swing from snappy marches to college foot ball songs and cheers in a program that will continue for the best part of an hour. Thou- sands of alumni and friends will be listening in for the program and accom- panying messages from the alumni president and members of the foot ball coaching staff. Bob Higgins or Cary Conover, assistant coaches at Penn State, will probably speak briefly on the team and its annual game with Pitt on Thanksgiving day. It has been sald that the Penn State band is like Knute Rockne’s “Flying Irish” of Notre Dame in that both are the pick of several hundred active candidates. Like Rockne, Thompson has no end of material for his organ- ization. Including all of his freshman candidates, the Penn State bandman cen place a band of 275 men on the field at one time. He does this every Monday afternoon on the college campus when the college R. O. T. turns out in full for its weekly revlow He had the entire group out for the alumni homecoming day game with Syracuse and they. almost filled New Beaver Field in marching formation. It is the “cream” of this great musical group that will be rewarded with a trip to- Pittsburgh.
