30 DECSON DELAVED ON PONERPROET Planning Body Acjourns Hear- 'l ing Without Making Findings Public. Without deciding whether to approve | of a power proposal in connection with | a park project for the Potomac Palisades ! and Great Falls country, the National ! Capital Park and Planning Commission | adjourned yesterday. While members of ! the commission present formed a con- sensus, Lieut. Col. U. S. Grant, 3d, executive officer of the commission, said it was voted not to make the find- ings public until the matter had been ' laid before the four absentee members. | ‘These are Stephen T. Mather, Senator Capper of Kansos, chairman of the Senate District committee; Representa- | tive Zihlman of Maryland, chafrman of the House District committee, and Frederic A. Delano. Most of the two-day session was given over to consideration of the report of the special committee on plans for the area. This committee recommended that only a park project be provided for, and that there was no immediate need for a power plant. This reiterated the previous stand of the commission, which wis set aside for further study upon representations that a joint power and park project might be possible. Meet Maryland Group. ‘The commission conferred yesterday afternoon with representatives of the Maryland - National Capital Park and Planning Commission, including T. Howard Duckett of Hyattsville and J. H. Cissel of Silver Spring, members; | J. Bond Smith, general counsel, and | Irving Root, engineer, of the Maryland body. Following this conference, Mr. Duckett said that the matter would be | discussed by the Maryland body at a mesting tonight in the Evans Building, but he also indicated that it is un- | likely that any definite action would be_taken. ‘The fai'ure of the commission to take | action probably will serve to hold up | the report on th2 power project by Maj. Brehon Somervell, Army engineer, in charge of the Potomac River district. He has had before him for some time the application of the Potomac River Corporation for a preliminary power permit, - filed with the Federal Power Commission. He indicated today he | probably would hold the report until final action is taken by the commis- sion. Col. Grant said today that it probably would take another month be- :még the commission would tak: final ction. UTILITY OFFICIALS . ASSAIL SENATORS Commissioners Debate Walsh Res- olution in Bitter Session at New Orleans, By the Associated Press. NEW ORLEANS, November 14.—The Walsh resolution calling for an inquiry into the utilities industry was’ discussed at last night's session of the National Association of Railroad and Utilities ‘Commissioners. The meeting broke ip with the adop- tion of a resolution to strike most of the remarks from the record. The argument opened after the adop- tion of the report of Lewis M. Gettle of the Wisconsin Commission, who was chairman of a committee that appeared before the.Senate committee and took part in the battle that resulted in the Walsh resolution being amended to climinate State commissions and pro- viding for an investigation by the Fed- eral Trade Commission. In presenting th> report Mr. Gettle declared that he had been impressed the “monumental ignorance of those ::‘g:;u_c‘ Senators engaged in this in- O. H. B. Jacobson of the Minnesota Commission asserted there were no “practical men in the Senate.” L. C. Young of the Montana Commis- sion said he was “satisfied that politi- | cal motives” prompted Senator Walsh to_introduce the resolution. _‘Pnnk P. Morgan of Alabama declared ‘these self-appointed rate experts in the Senate know as much about rates as a goat does about astronomy.” Louis B. Epes of Virginia disagreed, asserting that he was convinced that something more than political maneu- vering was behind the inquiry. A charge that scores of railroads are abusing their privileges in fixing excur- | sion and reduced rates was made before | the association yesterday by Frank P. Morgan, Alabama commissioner. In some Alaskan streams salmon have at times appeared in such massed numbers as to make it seem that the channel was almost solidly filled with fish. This, however, occurs only during brief periods at the height of the an-( nual runs or migrations of adult salmon from the sea to streams for spawning purposes. H LT S I Designer of Ukulele.
