THE SUNDAY STAR, WASHINGTON, | msn AW T0 FORN B PARK Army Engineers Prepare to Start New Project as Soon as Funds Are Ready. BY WILLIAM J. WHEATLEY. - Elimination of the largest of the Naticnal Capital's remaining unsizhtly and health menacing marsh land areas | and its beautification for an addition | to ths park system will begin July 1. under the item in the District of Co- | Jumbia_appropriation bill as it appears now. It is ths Anacosiia River flats nroject between Benning Bridge and ;l\“ District of Columbia-Maryland ine. All preparations have been made by Aa). Brehon Somervell, Army Engineer In charge of th> local river and harbor district, to bagin work at that time, e8 the pros~nt bill docs not carry the usual restriction against the use of any of the appropriation for work above the . bridge. While not all of the work has bean completed between the bridge and | the mouth of the Anacostia River, nevertheless the engineers have been ready to start work above the bridge for some time. There remains about a vear's work to be done below the bridge. but this can be completed sim- uitancously with the promotion of the project above the bridge. Park Will Be Unique. Completion of the project, which will require approximately nine years. will give the National Capital a park of a kind said to be different from any found anywhere else in the world. Purchase of praperty necessary in the reclaniation work has been going on for a number of years, and is practically completed. The necessary cquipment has been assembled. and the plans perfected for inaugurating the project at the bgin- | ning of the fiscal year. The Arm dredge Benning is now in the river ready to go under the Benning Bridge. The first work that will hiv> to be | done in connection with th~ project will be to change the piers in the chan- nelway of the bridge. - At the present time there is only & width of 26!, feet | clearance between the picrs. By re- moving these, and replacing the prese piers with smaller ones, ‘he (ngin»e: will have a clearance of 30': feek: which will permit the dredge Renning to pass through, without the nece: of building an expensive draw, has been found objectionabl~. b dredge has been specially designed that the superstructure may be easily ! dismantled to permit it to pass under the bridge with its present clearance, | and as it will remain in the upper | reaches of the river for nearly 2 decade, | the dismantling is not looked vpon as | ® serious or expensive proposition. | Once the bridge is prepared. and the dredge taken through and again fitted wp it will begin the work of rhrowing | up levecs over sea-wall foundations of | stone. behind which will v> pumped ne tons of dredgings from the channel. Will Displace Marsh Water. As it passes up the river toward the District line, the dredge will eat 2 channel 6 feet deep and varying width from 100 to 300 feet, which afte) I'E LANDS TO BECOME MAGNIFICENT D. C. C, MARCH 4, 1928—PART 1. . . Making Friends—, There probably is no characteristic which adds more to a business than its ability to make and keep Jriends. A store’s real worth is measured by the kind of Jriends it has. That is the “wear well” part of it. For, if a store makes friends of its customers, it must do the things that keep them. Forty-seven years at mak- ing friends and keeping hem has been the policy of ur store and it is in no wise an unenviable record. oy it Includ HARRY KAUFMAN 1316 -1326 Seventh St NW.
