v RISES TO STARDOM BY“NAKING FACES dy Peel Only British Peer- -ess Appearing in Mo- tion Pictures. Wy the Assoclated Press. NEW YORK, December 2.—“Making faces” won tame and a peerage for Beatrice Lillle, who as a little girl imitated people all day long. Today she is the only British peeress in mo- tion plctures. Miss Lillie, in private life Lady Peel, wife of Sir Robert Peel, is unique among the noblewomen of England. 8he has two identities—one as a So- clety leader, wife and mother; the other as a stage and screen celebrity. She keeps the two distinctly apart. rn in Toronto, the daughter of a musiclan, she was predestined for a musical career. But—she liked to “make faces.” Bhe imitated her family; she imi- tated the neighbors. She developed an ability at impersonation, and her mother, being wise, encouraged it, It did not help her toward fame in music —but it eventually led to fame on the stage. Her marriage to Sir Robert resulted from stage stardom, indirect- ly. And her debut in pictures, in the new Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer comedy, with Jack Pickford, resulted from her success in “Charlot’'s Revue.” ‘While in school Miss Lillie worked | out a serfes of comic songs-—"just for fun.” She had playved in New York and decided to essay London. She tried one of the “comic” songs. The effect was instantaneous. She was given a hearing by Charlot. The re- sult was that London acclaimed her impersonation of the grand opera prima donna and the rest of her droll imitations. After her marriage she quit the stage for a time to rule over the Peel mansion. But as soon as her small son was able to accompany her she and her husband worked out their present system. During the show sea- son she's “Beatrice Lille.” Between seasons she’s “Lady Peel.” Motion pictures are a new adven- ture to her, but her talent for “mak ing faces” will be re-employed in ac- curate portrayals of ren (ypes that are in themselves humorous. studlo hails her as the discovery on the screen as a comedienne. . et Japanese Royalty Economize.
