HOUSE T0 E¥PEDITE PUBLIC BUSINESS Longworth Assures Presi- dent Major Legislation Will Not Be Delayed. Assurance was given President Coolidge yesterday by Representative Longworth ot Ohlo, Speaker of the House, that no time will be lost by that body in {ts disposing of the major matters of legislation during the coming short session. He told ' the President that the House leader- ship is preparing to break the record established during the last session in the matter of expediting Its busi- ness. During his conference with the President the Speaker outlined to him a tentative legislative program which the House leadership has de- cided upon. He explained, howeve: definite and will very likely undergo considerable alteration before the ({:omln: session has proceeded very ar, Appropriations Head List. Speaker Longworth told the Pres- ident that the various appropria- tion bills will be the first order of business. He looks for these meas- ures to be entirely disposed of by the middle of January, and at least four of them will be passed before the adjournment for the Christmas holidays, it is predicted. While on this subject the Speaker explained that the appropriations committee now has its bills in a state of prepa- ration far in advance of any corre- sponding work in a number of years. Confidence was expressed by the Speaker in the belief that the Repub- licans will be able before Christmas to pass the alien property bill, which provides for a complete settlement of German _claims growing out of the World War. ‘The legislative program as briefly outlined by the Speaker, calls also for legislation regulating radio con- trol. The Speaker said the indications are that there will be considerable discussion regarding proposed tax re- duction and that probably advocates of the various forms of farm relief will have plans to offer. Speaker Longworth personally has formed no conclusions regarding def- inite action looking toward the dis- posal of the Treasury surplus. He said that he had not given sufficient study to commit himself at this time to the President’s suggestion for turn- ing back the surplus to the taxpayers. ‘There will be a serious effort on the part of those Senators who have been seeking farm relief legislation to have something of this nature enacted at the coming session, according to Sen- ator Borah of Idaho, who came to the White House today for a conference with the President in response to a summons from the latter. The Idaho Senator said that the principal sub- Ject discussed at this conference re- lated to the agricultural situation and the question of extending relfef.
