In one instance in which an owner desired doing over the radiator and ne hood to match the rest of the car the |f painter displayed some rare ability in color matching and paint mixing. To the untrained eyve the original color on the ear was a sort of sunburned But the painter made green part of his mixture. Here is ombination that turned the Yellow, buff, black, green and red! J'his artist of the motor world said that the addition of red enabled him to make a perfect match. Black, he finds, is very useful to mix with other paints’ when attempting to match a difficult_color, particularly if the hue is a bit more weathered (darker) than the standard shade. Drive Line Improved. The drive line of the automobile has been improved by the develop ment of adjustable tapered universal Jjoints. Replacements are not neces sary with his new equipment. When the joints wear the tapered bushings ve tightened up and evervthing is s good as new, If the owner forgets to Ilpbricate them the penalty is far less severe, Best Time to Grease. It is an excellent time to drain off the transmiesion and add fresh and heavier lubricant. The case will drain rapldly and more of the dirty, used lubricant will flow out than on a cooler day. This makes it less necessary to flush out the transmis- sion. In fact, unless the gears are quite gritty the flushing process can be eliminated. Shock-Absorbing Smashes. Safety glass. All-steel bodies. Double-strength bumpers. A new trend: making accidents comfortable! Pretty soon it may be possible to run head-on into another car and exclaim: “It's too bad they wouldn't use some of our money to make these roads a little smoother. Splinters, flying glass, weaving frames and toppling over are high- way hazards that are golng by the jboards. “Did you have a nice collision?” the future inquirer may ask. “Fair. It will be better when we have the instrument board padded.” Some Rains Are Spotty. Keep the car out of thundershow- ors, it possible. Unlike rains of other seasons they are apt to be severe on the car’s finish. This is due to the fact that the rain which falls dur- ing such a storm often is dirt laden. After some showers, cars look as though they had been sprinkled with a mild variety of acid. What's the Answer? 1.; D the ammeter show the current discharged when the engine is being started? 2. What is the function of the needle valve in the carburetor? 3. What is the chief difficulty in carburetor design? 4. What vital purpose does the overflow pipe in the radiator serve? 5. What is the function of the spring clip? (Think these over during the week |and look for the answer in this de- partment next Sunday. You mav be wrong.) The Finest Chassis ever Offered at the Price (OVERLOADING CARS HELD DANGEROUS Maryland Officials Plan to' Seek Law to Limit Num- ber of Passengers. An increase in the number of seri- ous automobile accidents attributed to overcrowding of motor cars with passengers is worrying the police de- partment of Baltimore. Charles D. Galther, police commissioner, an- nounced that he is seeking a method to stop the practice. If no other rem- edy can be found he will ask the next Legislature to pass a State law to con- trol the situation, he said. Mr. Gaither declared he had been worried over the matter for some time, but pointed out that the police of the city have no authority to ar- rest motorists who overcrowd their cars with, passengers. He said, how- ever, thaf patrolmen sometimes issue warning to such drivers. May Revoke Licenses. The police commissioner declared he had discussed the problem with other high officials of the department and with B. Austin Baughman, com- missioner of motor vehicles. It is not felt “that either of the officials could issue regulations against the danger, Mr. Gaither asserted. If a State regulation is enacted the penalty should not be a fine, he said. Instead he advocated revocation of the licenses of offenders for a period of time, explaining that this was the only forfeit that would prove effective. “There is no law in Baltimore or Maryland to regulate the matter,” the commissioner sald, “but I am con- vinced there should be. It is an ex- tremely dangerous practice to fill automobiles with more people than they can accommodate, and often re- sults in serfous accidents. “And it quite frequently happens | that it isnot the offender that suffers | the worst injuries. . | ““Three persons riding on the front | 1926— PART seat of cars also should be banned, as it is certain to interfere with the ef- ficlency of the driver. At present we are powerless to break up the prac- tice, but I hope to havé a law passed | on the matter at the next Legisla- ture.” The question was revived in Balti- more a few night ago, when a five- passenger motor car, carrying seven young men, crashed into another ma- chine. Three persons were injured, one of them serfously. VITAL TO AUTO OWNERS | (Continuéd from Sixth Page.) plcion upon the car that is offered | for sale with a low mileage. Either it has proved unsatisfactory to the first owner or the meter has been set back. The automobile that wilt do 20,000 miles in a year is subject to admira- tion, provided it is in good condition, and_the prospective purchaser will be inclined to value its stamina. He may try to argue that he is being cheated out of 10,000 miles of but in the end he will be inclined to conclude that this car has been over all the rough spots in a car's career, such as replacement of piston rings, relining of brakes and so on. By economizing on deprecfation car owners are beginning to bring the cost of motoring down to a point at which they can afford to buy better cars when they make a change.
