Touring across the ccriinent has become 50 extensive that special bodies should be designed with the purpose of facflitating camping, says the journal of the Soclety of Automotive Engineers for September in discuss- ing long-distance touring. A need now exists for an automobile that is suft- able not on - transportation but for sleeping qua rs as well. Nearly every one cherisi _s the hope of some day escaping the confining environ- ments of modern city life to spend a few weeks in camping and exploring and in many ways living in the ro- mantic manner of his ancestors. In 1924, according to authorities, some 12,000,000 persons used motor camplng equipment and slept in their own tents or cars at night. In 1925 the number will be greater. The daily expense per person is figured at $2. It is this volume which they deem necessary to a re- duction in overhead and to modern- ization of equipment. The motorist who takes his work to the poorly equipped shop usually finds he does not get the quick service he 2xpected because, while they go at the job at once, they are not equipped with the latest devices to turn out the work promptly. The bigger the volume of business handled by the large shops, experience seems to show, the better are they able to turn out good work promptly. Even many of the larger shops are handicapped for want of better equip- ment. This often is due to peculiar business complications. Many of the units on modern cars are built by specialists, and occasionally the serv ice stations are not supplied with proper tools and information cover- ing service on such parts because the manufacturers of these units are re- luctant to advertise the fact that their devices ever give trouble. This is fllustrated in many shops where, in order to service a device on a large number of cars, it is necessary to use a special clamp. Un- able to obtain suita clamps already designed for the job, the shops must make their own equipment. Others adopt various methods which often add to the ceost of service work and invariably take up time.
