52 VERTICAL VINDS SOLVESKY PUTLE Blasts That Wrecked Shen-| andoah Believed Cause of Hail and Lightning Bolts. That winds blow up and down as| well as horizontally was - forcibly | brought home to many people for the | first time by the destruction of the| Shenandoah. Far from being un usual, such “vertical winds” lie at the heart of some of our best known weather phenomena, according to a bulletin from the headquarters here of ational Geographic Soclety “Every flash of lightning that see, or that you hear as thunder, and every pellet of hail that falls is prob- ably due to a_‘vertical wind ¥s the bulletin. *‘These are the fruits of rather violent upward and downward blasts. If you consider as well the| gentler rising and falling currents— | the ‘vertical breezes,’ let us say—you | must take pretty much the whole field | of weather for your sphere. Cause of “Highs” and “Lows. Practically every isurface wind whatever be its direction or speed, is moving along to replace air which has risen. ~ Clouds, too, are built by ris- | ing air. The elusive little circles on | weather maps that denote ‘lows’ and | ‘highs’ are in final analysis the repre. sentation of upward and downward air currents. Where cold air from the upper regions flows down it com- presses the surface atmosphere and produces a ‘high’; where the air, be- cause of heat, is rising. it relieves the pressure and forms a ‘low.” Most weaher phenomena are due to the Interplay of forces between ‘higk and! “ows,” which bring in their train changes in wind, temperature and hu midity “The most spectacular of the effects | of ‘vertical’ winds are thunderstorms. As the tracer bullet marks the flight of projectiles for a marksman, so the | great towering ‘thunder head' marks | the upward rush of the invisible wind. Often these thunder clo s may be seen growing before one's eye. Sel- dom is the growth slow and orderl More-often it is violent, and the up surging clouds appear to boil madly Thunderstorms are usually local af fairs and the wind that has rushed up. ward must come quickly earthward again to restore the atmospheric bal ance. In the rear of thunderstorms, therefore, strong downward currents | are usually encountered. It was such an upward then downward rush of air, apparently, that played an impor tant part in the destruction of the Shenandoah. | i | | | | Set Lightning Free. | “Until comparatively recently the | origin of the tremendous charges of electricity in a_thunderstorm baffled | science. Now it is pretty generally believed that they are caused by the upward gusts of air—that these are | in truth the dynamos of the sky. The | building up of the electrical charges | is supposed to be brought about by | the guests blasting ndrops to pieces, the smaller fragments car- rying negative charges upward while the large droplets with positive charges remain behind. Hostile forces | are established and when the strain becomes too great it Is relieved by a lightning flash. When the negatively | charged upper cloud floats away be- fore the strain is relieved, the_flash is to_the earth. *“Vertical winds' are also credited with the production of hail, and their onionliike _structure beafs out the theory. Raindrops carried upward by | the I violent gust: according (ui this hypothesis, are frozen in the cold upper air. Sinking in the boiling cloud they acquire more moisture on | the lower levels and are again carried to the freezing region. On the numbe of skyward trips made before they | escape from the boiling cloud and fall | earthward depends the size of the hall- | stones.’ i RAILWAYS SEEK CONTROL OF FERTILE TERRITORY Five Companies Compete Before I. C. C. for Area of Approximately | 10,000 Square Miles. By the Associated Press PLAINVIEW, Tex., September 12.— | Rail control of a fertile area of ap-| proximately 10,000 square miles is the prize for which five railroads, three of which are connected with main sys- | tems, are contending before the Inter- | state Commerce Commission. { ". E. Boles, examiner for the com.- | mission, said he expected to make his | recommendation before October 1, He | said the fight may be the last of a | competitive nature. B | “Only in southeastern Oregon is! there a contest among railroads ap- proaching in consequence that of the South Plains contest,” he declared. | ““It probably will be settled before our | problem.” Railroads involved for the future | control of the South Plains, an area now populated by about 140,000 people | but destined to support millions, are | the Panhandle and Santa Fe, an | Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe road, and the only road now directly serving any part of South Plains; the Fort Worth and Denver City, a Chicago, Burlington and Quincy railroad; the Quanah, Acme and Pacific a sub- sidlary of the Frisco- system:; the Texas, Panhandle and Gulf, and the | Gulf, Texas and Western. New Sun Dial Accurate. Although sun dials have been satis- factory in a general way for giving the hours, a new one has been invent- ed that tells time to within 30 seconds Hands are geared to the dial, which has an additional part through which a ray of light passes. The dial is im- proved also to correct for different po- sitions of the sun during the different seasons, allowing for the equation of time of the amount of time the sun is ahead of or behind its average posi tion.
