EVOLUTIONBATTLE 1S UST STARTING Bryan and Darrow Promise to Carry On—Scopes Is Nearly Overlooked. BY ROBERT T. SMALL. DAYTON, Tenn., July 22.—The so- called monkey trial is temporarily at least a thing of the past, but the monkey and parrot battle between Messrs. Clarence Darrow and Willlam Jennings Bryan appears only to have been started. Mr. Bryan was just get- ting warmed up to his work when the trial was shot from under him. There was a sudden determination and agreement between Mr. Darrow of the defense and Attorney General Stewart for the state that no arguments be- fore the jury were necessary. Every- body wanted a conviction so the issues might be thrashed out in the higher courts. This robbed Mr. Bryan, however, of his chance for a final speech in the courtroom or on the courthouse lawn. He had prepared such a speech and has announced he will deliver it be. fore some sort of audience before he leaves Tennessee. He may choose the occaston of a visit to the home of the learned judge who has presided in the case, at Winchester, during the com- ing week end. opes Finally Remembered. In an " unexpected rush back to normalcy the court suddenly remem- bered that the business before it was to convict and sentence one John Thomas Scopes for teaching nice little boys at the high school that men descended from a lower order of animals. The State said he did it. The defense counsel said he did it, the defendant said he did it. There was such a complete unanimity of opinion it seemed for a time the jury would be cut off from a chance to function. But the jury eventually retired and came back and said he did it, and all was well. ‘Whereupon the defendant, at least for a moment, came into his place in the sun. He bared his breast and, like a modern Nathan Hale, regretted he had only one liberty to give to his academic ideals. He intends to live by those ideals in the future, and if necessary, as Mr. Bryan seems to think, to perish by them. Scopes spoke but a minute er two, boy, after resting in obscurity the first day of the trial, showed that Shipping News Arrivals at and Sailings From New York Daylight Saving Time. MANDEVILLE, La., July 22.—A prayer for the conversion to Chris- tianity of Clarence Darrow, a de- fense attorney In the Scopes trial, which ended yesterday in Tennes- see, was offered last night at the State assembly of the Baptist Young Peoples’ Union here. The prayer was given at the sug- gestion of E. D. Solomon, State sec- retary, and hope was expressed that Darrow might be won as St. Paul was won. he has the real stuff in him and may vet go far. Mr. Bryan regretted the untimely end of the trial. When he saw the curtain was about to fall, he suggested to Mr. Darrow that they renew their quarrel before the great court of public opinfon. Mr. Darrow said he thought it was unfair to the taxpay- ers of Rhea County to keep them longer under expense and he would be glad to join the Commorer in a first-class quarrel in the newspapers, Mr. Bryan leading off with w list of questions he would have shot at Dar- row it only he could have called him as a witness, and Mr. Darrow re- plying to “the best of his knowledge and belief,” Mr. Darrow being gen- .e(rull)lwtrodl!ed with considerable nowledge and owning u; little bellef. Gl So_the monkey and parrot battle has begun between the two and no- body knows when it will end. Mr. Darrow has announced that in the fight he represents the monkeys. Mr. Bryan feels that he stands at Armageddon. Mr. Darrow Insists he has done no more to destroy intelli- gent faith in Christianity than Mr. Bryan has by his insistence upon a literal fundamentalism. Mr. Bryan regards Clarance Darrow as a great menace to Christianity and is going to take the fleld against him. Sees Ulterior Motives. Mr. Darrow professes to see in Mr. Bryan the leadership in & crusade which seeks to impose certain relig- ious beliefs upon all men. He says the purpose is not yet in the open, but he predicts it will grow and sud- denly “engulf” the people as national prohibition did. Mr. Darrow says Mr. Bryan is working for a new union of church and State. Mr. Bryan says Mr. Darrow is at the head of a great conspiracy. which would destroy the Bible and all the old_homely beliefs in the Scriptures. The issue appears to be fairly well joined. Mr. Bryan promises to con- tinue his attacks on Darrow until one or the other passes to that bourne from which no traveler refurneth, when at last the great secret will be revealed, or utter oblivion will end another cherished hope of the im- mortality of the soul. Mr. Bryan likes a personal issue. It would be abdiract to pit Christianity against evolution. Mr. Bryan makes Darrow the arch defendant. Darrow is willing to_take up the cudgels. We have not heard the last of this. Far from it. Mr. Bryan is going to the country and glory in the revelation of his lack of scientific knowledge. Ended as It Began. ended just as it began. Scopes remains an’ evolution- ist. Darrow remains an agnostic. Bryan remains a fundamentalist, and says he will stick by his Bible—to the literal letter of it—to the end of his 's, and he cares naught for the of sclence and scoffs at the profound learning of those who pretend to have solved something of the world’s mysteries. Upshaw of Georgia, who arrived here last night from Dal- 1as, Tex., upon being shown press dis- patches from Dayton, Tenn., to tae effect that he was expected to intro- duce in the National Congress an “anti-evolution bill,” stated that in his opinfon “it would be better for the individual States to handle the evolu- tion teaching matter just as Tennes- see ald.” “However, I am open to convic: tion,” added Mr.-Upshaw. He stated that he wished to copfer with leaders of the antl-evolution movement before making a definite decision Mr. Upshaw declared that he favored “the old-time religion” and when first requested to sponsor in Congress an anti-evolution bill had indicated his approval and consent. Later, he sald, he declded that to allow the States to make Individual laws would be better, at least for the present. Will Edit Magazine. He pointed out that the bill which Rhea County Superintendent of Schools Whité had drafted and wished him to introduce was not an anti- evolution bill in the sense of pro- hibiting the teaching of evolution in the United States, but merely pro- hibited the teaching of theories of evolution in schools. which receive Federal aid. “I suppose 1 was selected because of my well known opposition to the devilish and debasing doctrine that a militant, God-fearing man has any monkey blood in his veins,” said the Georgla Representative Mr. Upshaw stated that he expected to accept an offer just received to be- come a co-editor of a new national magazine, whose purpose would be to “fight atheistic evolution and boot- leggers.” He did not name magazine. He sought to save Darrow, but the job was too great. He had no sooner told him to “go and sin no more” when the unregenerate Chicago lawyer was throwing brickbats at some of the Bible stories.
