The cost of production last vear was placed at §0.486,000,000, or nearly 2 per cent greater than the $6,363. nated for the vear before. ease in gross income over the fiscn! yvear 1924 was fixed at T per cent Returns from grains were esti- | mated at_ $1,984,000,000, compared with $1,393,000,000 for the preceding year; from meat animals, $2,851,000, 000, compared with $2,167,000,000; fruits and vegetables, $1.370,000,000, compared with $1,526,000,000: eotton and cottonseed, $1,690,000,000, com pared with $1,808,000,000, and dairy and poultry products, $3,284,000,000, compared with $8,315,000,000. Gets Larger Returns. The average net income per oper- ator, including all farmers, tenants and ‘owners, was estimated by the de- partment at $876 for the year, com- pared with $764 for the year before. This covered the return on the farm- ers’ equity in his property as well as the earnings for the labor of himself and family for the year, the depart- ment said. Deducting 4.5 per cent as interest on capital invested, the farmer’s return was $649, compared with $331 for the year before. The average wage of hired farm labor was $569 LEATHER COMPANIES ARE DOING BETTER NEW YORK, July 22 (®).—Im. proved business of the Central Leather Co. resulted in net profit of $1,000,196 for the first half of 1925, equal to $3 a share on the preferred, in contrast to a deficit of $1,114,385 in the corre- sponding period last year. BY J. C. ROYLE, NEW YORK, July The United States is its own best customer since Americans at sent have both the willingness te buy and ability to pay. It is for that reason that the present tremendous volume of building con. structien is having a marked favorable influence on other industries. There is every reason to believe from the work now in progress and the plans already decided on that the last half of 1925 will bring the total expended in build- ing for the whole year close to $6,000,000,000. No Check Apparent. There has been no apparent check to building. The first half of this year showed a gain over the carrespond- ing period of 1924 of 3 per cent and an increase over 1923 of 13 per cent. Part of the heaviest gains were piled up in June and this month so far is ex- ceeding all expectations. Building in New York City has been heavy, al- though not up to the totals of last vear. Undoubtedly the shortage in many eclasses of edifices here has been made up. But in most other sections the improvement has been marked. In some 375 cities thepvalue of con- struction so far this year is placed well above §2,400,000,000. This does not take in the thousands of smaller communities and work dgne on the farms. The activity in the Southern States® has been specially marked. Florida construction is meving at an unprecedented pace in the hope of completing hotels and residences in time for the Winter rush of 1625-26. | Both skilled and unpskilled labor is weing drawn frone all parts of the ountry to meet the demand, Many Different Booms. The Gulf Coast of Mississippi and Louisiana also is experiencing a r markable real estate boom and th are strong indications that the vol.| ume of tourist travel in that sectlon | this Winter will necessitate tremen: | dous eonstruction programs. The in creases are not confined to the South, | however, although Hollywood, Miami, Key West and other cities in Florida showed increases in the last six| months as compared with last year of | 100 to 800 per cent. Ohio, New York, Arkansas, Illinols, Kentucky, Mis- | souri, California Washington and | Oregon have cities which made re. markable pr Experts agre® that one reason why | building has®net been checked is that | building material producers and mak- | ers of furnishings und equipment have Dbeen wise enough not to rush prices up to what the traffic would bear. Building materials are firmer than a month ago, but no broad increase has been made generally in brick, cement, steel, lumber, limestone, oil or paint prices i HELPS SHIPPING FIRM Merchants & Miners Earnings Running Well Ahead of Last Year's Returns, Special Dispatch to The Star BALTIMORE.
