WILD RISE IN AMERICAN CAN FEATURES SATURDAY TRADING Level of New Tops Reached—Rails Lag Behind: French Francs Jump Nearly Seven Points—Close Is Strong. By the Associated Press. b NEW YORK, June 27.—The pre- cipitous retreat of an overcrowded short interest in American Can, which sent that stock up 10 points to a rec- ord high at 200, featured = brigg up- ward movement in tdday’s bri slon of the stock market. The ity of the advance in many issues in- vited profit taking and short selling, but strong buying support was forth. coming and closing prices were gen- erally higher. Can Closes Near High. Can closed 2 points below the top. Recent buying of this issue has been based on expectations of a splitup of the stock, with an increased dividend on the new shares. Directors of the company meet here next Tuesday, but there is a widespread difference of opinion as to whether a plan of re- capitalization will be authorized at that time. Strength of General Motors and Yel- low Cab Manufacturing. both of which attained record high levels, was asso- clated with Chicago reports of a $60,000,000 motor merger involving these companies. General Motors touched 85% and then eased to 843, up 3% on the day, and Yellew Cab sold as high as 48% and then dropped to 461 for a net gain of 1% points. Rubbers forged steadily ahead in further response to the announcement of higher tire prices. United States Rubber common attained a new max mum at 49% and then yielded a poir on profit taking. Lee Tire touched « new top at 16% and Goodrich pre ferred at 104%. Nearly a score of issues broke through their previous top prices for the vear. the list including Packard, Motor Wheel Corporation, Woolworth Philadelphia Co., United Cigar Stores Robert Reis preferred, White Rock certificates and Metropolitan Edison preferred. Armour of Delaware dupli- cated the year's maximum. Southern Railway Steady. Rails lagged behind the rest of the list, although Rutland preferred was bid up 314 points to 61 on a few sales. Southern Railway closed prac tically unchanged at 97, the announce ment of the court decision against the preferred stockholders not being re- ceived by the financial district until after the market closed. Sharp rallies in the French and Be! gian exchanges featured the irregul: foreign exchange market. French francs jumped nearly 7 points to around 4.61 cents and Belgian francs moved up 4 point 4.761; cents Demand sterling eased slightly to 4.85% and Ttalian lire sagged below 3.60 cents. e TREASURY FOURS REACH RECORD PRICE AT 104 Railroad Bond Movements Bring Out Contrasts in Saturday Trading. By the Associated Press. NEW YORK, June 27.—Firmness of money rates over the week end and conservation of funds in antici- pation of attractive new offerings in- tensified the normal Saturday dull- ness of the bond market today Prices moved within extremely nar. row limits, but maintained a steady tone. Most conspicuous feature of trading was a rise in United States Treasury 4s to record high price at 104. Liberty bonds were irregular, but held close to the year's high levels.
