rs _:Sonor Yanes, Acting _ Venezuelan Minister, i k& Takes Over Legation Likely to Rem‘uin in Post as Charge d'Affaires for Year. # R Trained in Diplomacy. ) ' Benor' Francisco Gerardo Yanes, 1 Who has been d'affaires of m Venezuela since the departure of Dr. 4Aracaya November 10, 1924, when he o wWas led on a special mission to ¢ Caracas, and since has been to a position in the cabinet, is one of the ripe scholars of his country , and besides being a trained diplomat, was for many years proiessor of in- terpational law in the venerable Uni- versity of Venezuela, which since the opening of the seventeenth century has been educating the youth of that country {n the professions and in the r. Yapes was in the late Winter joined here bty his wife, who was be- fore her marriage Senorita Maria Amengual Amalia, and their only child, a charming young girl just entering her 17th year. The family has taken , over the lease of the former Venezu- elan legation on Massachusetts averiue Y at the bend of Sheridan Circle. As there is no immediate prospect of the appointment of a Minisger Resident to succeed Dr. Areaya, Dr. Yanes:. as- sumes important rank in the Latin American counsels, and his tenure as charge will be prolonged for perhaps a year longer. Senorita Liisg Yanes, who has been a notable ditien to the ranks of Latin maidens, was much inspired by the accounts which her father zave her of the accomplishments and efficiency of American maids, so that when she came here in February, in- stead of plunging into the whirl, she entered a private school and has diligently studied English and literature, has entered all the ath- letic classes and is a candidate for belleship when she is presented here next Winter. Senora Yanes and her daughter plan to leave Washington for New York early in June. In fact both have delayed their departure for the reception which the Pan- American Union is extending to the President and Mrs. Coolidge May 29. They will spend a month in New York, mostly in sightseeing and visiting some old friends there. July 1 they will sail on the Cara- boba for Caracas, where Senora de Yanes will visit her mother and other relatives. Senorita Elisa will enter a convent school, that of San Josef de Tarbes, outside the Venezuelan capital, at which she has already spent six years and will apply herself strenuously to her studies all through the Summer. She hopes to have com- pleted her course by January and will then return to Washington. and figure among the buds of the Winter. Dr. Yanes' only daughter is of rare beauty and grace. She has the clear pink and white complexion more assocl- ated with the Scandinavian or the _Scotch_than the Latin and her hair, which--she wears in the prevailing . bobbed style, is of pure golden sheen >~ and naturally curly. . She is very fond of pets and the Venezuelan le- gation possesses many under the present regime. One white cat, Liz- zie, is her special companion and has been trained more carefully than the i feline is generally. Senora de Yanes, ! like her husband, is a native of Cara- cas and has lived there most of her , life. She has traveled extensively in + Europe and this country. As is her daughter, Senora 1)e Yanes, is en- . saged In studying English, and- she ! hopes soon to use the language more | easily than now. She studied English and knows it in the theoretic sense and writes a pleasant note, but she is | timid about speech. She will return to Washington in the early Autumn, | leaving her daughter in Caracas, and will g0 there at Christmas time to | bring her to America.
