Mrss EUGENIE LEMERLE, To make her debut Saturday atthe home of her parents, De. Mrs. iuger‘: L.Lc]i:r e/ Mrs. Coolidge Wins Place In Hearts of the People By Gentle, Winning Ways New England Idea of Simplicity in Haspitality Maintained—DBrilliant Diplomatic Function Among Leading Events of Week. SALLIE V. H. PICKETT. ACH “first lady” brings into the White House a distinctive person- E ality that gives her a place all her own in the history of the famous mansion, and Mrs. Coolidge, with her gentle, retiring way, her artistic instinct and simple American hospitality, is giving the country a pleasing impretsion of herself. The first state function in an administration may be taken as a true index of the woman behind the President, and Thursday night the New England taste for simplicity and hospitality fully maintained the traditions of the White House. There was a daintiness about every-touch of the decoration, and pink mmust be Mrs. Coolidge's orite color, for gracefully arranged Mme. Butttrfi_y roses, with the dainty sprays of stevia in pale biue, with branches of maiden-hair fern, were used throughout the state suite HIS week has in store the most brilliant of all state functions, the diplomatic reception, to be held at 9 o'clock Thursday night, when the dean of the corps, M. Jusserand, ambassador of France, and Mme. Jusserand will lead the other members of the corps in stately array be- fore the President and Mrs. Coolidge, who will be assisted by the Secre- tary of State and Mrs. Hughes in receiving, with other members of the cabinet and their wives assisting otherwise in the blue room. idge has invited the members-of the Senate Women's Lunch Club to luncheon with her Tuesday, and Mrs. Royal Copeland, wife of the new senator from New York, and others will become better acquainted under most auspicious circumstances. EN a downpour-of rain could not stop visitors irom the cabinet v E “at homes" Wednesday, and smiling hostesses, cheerful assistants| and tea tables gay with flowers took visitors back to pre-war days, the diplomats visiting each cabinet hostess. Miss Mellon presided with grace and dignity over her father’s household, and adding interest and topic for conversation were the rare pictures on each wall of the reception suite. and other older masters is a privilege to which the great mass of Wash- ington visitors is not accustomed. THE Congressional Club assumed its rightful place in Washington's official life Friday afternoon, the new president of the club and her able assistants, the new board, receiving the wives of new menibers, of the upper and lower houses with consummate grace. The usual schedule of social amenities will be carried on there during the season, there being a reception for the President and Mrs. Coolidge, the Speaker and Mrs. Gillett and others. A MOST important and interesting social event on for this week is the ball to be given at Raucher’s: Wednesday night for the benefit of Columbia Hospital, and having an “all-society” management, with every detail for the comfort of guests carried out to the fullest, it cannot be other than a brilliant affair. Many dinner _Fames have been arranged to precede the ball, and with Mrs. Walter R. Tuckerman, chairman; Mme. Ekengren, chairman of boxes; a long list of important society women as patronesses on other committees, and with Col. Mathew De Laney to make the introductions, but little more could be asked. TTENDED by encouraging success Friday and Saturday, the rummage sale for the benefit of the Child Welfare Society will continue to- morrow and next day with unstinted zeal, at 1328 street. Followin, close on this popular charity will be an attraction for another one o Washington’s pet hobbies, Neighborhood House, in the form of a Japa- nese afternocn, when almost the same well known women as those inter- ested in the Child Welfare sale will take part. 'OTHING in anticipation is more delightful than the Children’s Hospital ball at the New Willard, January 2, when the little ballroom—quite the size of other large ballrooms—will be arranged exclusively for the sub-debutante class at home for the holidays. There will be twelve boxes *~ surrounding the walls, to be taken by mothers of the young set, many of whom will occupy boxes in the large ballroom, where the dancers may tomfortably “sit out” 3 number when they like. This arrangement was thought out when the large ballroom showed signs of an uncomfortable overflow. and as a compliment to the schoolgirl and schoolboy element then to be in_ Washington. Mrs. Frederick Brooke is president of the board of the Children’s Hospital, and Mrs. Henry Leonard, chairman of the ball committee. MR. WILLIAM PHELPS ENO is giving the use of his drawing rooms at 9 o'clock tomorrow night for. an interesting meeting at which Mrs. Winifred Holt Mather will speak on “The Light Houses,” and give interesting experiences of her magnificent work for the blind, which has covered almost her entire life. There are four of the *Light Houses,” one in ‘New York, another in Buffalo and the other two in Italy and Frnnce’ respectively. The effort is to establish-a ational committee-to cafry-on the work of the four light hoGses, resident Coolidge and the Presidents of other administrations beyond Grover Cleveland's time have acted as honorary presidents for the organization. The patrons for Mrs. Mather's work include many of the best known men and womefi of this and the old world. UNDER particularly fashionable patronage the Swedish Ballet will hold the boards at the Shubert-Gatrick Theater tomorrow night and for the rest of the week. -The minister of Sweden and Mme. Wallenberg head the list and will occupy a box tomorrow night, as will Mrs, Richard Townsend, whose interest is not alone centered in the artistic presentation, but aiso in' Cole Porter, author of the music for the ballet, “Within the Quoto.” Mrs. Cole Porter was formerly Linda’ Lee, a southern belle, am{lthe freqlieonf. guest of D:{n.“l‘:‘wnucflhdi l?Iher atron. most of whom will occupy boxes, ar T. .28 T8, irles - Ind Mre Lawrence Townsend: M. and Mro.
