;' MeRme New York Stock Exchange|; FINANCIAL. THE "SUNDAY STAR, WASHINGTON, D. C, JANUARY 22, 1922—PART -1. LESINFUTURE] - SHEEPS MARKET Ma;rket Hopes Predicted Ex-|Scope and Volume for Week pansion Will Boom Trade. Copper Is Quiet. NEW YORK, January 21.—In ab- sence of the increase in business ex- pected after the holidays, the steel matket at the moment is being sus- tained by hopes that the predicted expansion is not far distant. In view of the number of building projects in contemplation and the needs of the railroads these hopes would appear to be well founded, although it is now conceded that there is little probabil- ity of much activity during the pres- ent month. The pig iron market is also in a waiting position. and buyers appear to be holding off in the hope of a re- duction in prices. Small Export Trade in Copper. Copper has remained quiet. Some sales are being made by the copper export assoclation for shipment to Germany and France, also Italy and Holland, but the business has been comparatively small. Otherwise very little, if any, export trade is reported and there has been no revival of de- mand from.domestic buyers. while, second-hands and some of the smaller producers are shading prices, and it is said that buyers are finding ulty in placing small orders delivered, for prompt and first-quarter electrolytic. Producers whose stocks have been considerably reduced and who still have a_ goo deal of copper to ship out on old or- ders are maintaining their quotation of 14 cents, which puts them prac- tically out of the market. Premium on Tin. Tin still commands a premium for prompt and January delivery over futures, .with an improvement in con- suming demand. Offerings for. for- ward shipment from the east are lib- eral, and are being reflected in a low- ering af bids here. Lead remains in a healthy position statistically. Large producers are well booked up for January shipment and are showing no disposition to make concessions for February busi- ne While there is little increase in the demanfl for zinc, producers anticipate improvement in the near future, when the demand for steel products in- creases, which would bring the mills into the market. Antimony continues quiet and easy, but even at concessions there is very little demand for export, and con- sumers seem to be well supplied. BALTIMORE PRODUCE. BALTIMORE, Md., January 21 (Special).—The demand for strictly fresh native and nearby eggs is rather cautio the recent action of the market having shattered buyers’ confidence in_egg prices. Each day now is calculated to bring forth new developments in the egg market, whihh is very sensitive at this season of the year. Receipts have been mod- erate this week and the market closed ¢ steady, with 40 cents a dozen top price. ' Prompt and frequent ship- Iments are more advisable than heavy shipments the coming week. The live poultry market continues easy. Receipts have been liberal and only desirable fat stock of all lines finds ready sale. Turkeys are-lower, 40 to 45 a pound for choice hens, 35 to 40 for young gobblers and old toms and_30 for poor and crooked breasts. There is a fairly good de- mand for large young chickens at 25 and 26, with Young winters. two pounds ‘and under, bringing 28 to 30; staggy. rough and thin and white Leghorns overlooked at 15 to 24; large, fat old hens in fair demand at 21 to 23, but small and white Leg- Reminiscent of Many Feverish Sessions. NEW YORK, January 21.—A wave of bullish speculation swept over the stock market this week, the move- ment, both in scope and volume, be- ing reminiscent of the many fever- ishly active sessions which charac- terized the protracted war perlod. Shares of the independent or secon- dary steel groups- were foremost in the” advance, which also compre- hended equipments, motérs and an unusual assortment of special issues, including sugars. The railway list was neglected and oils, in whicH fur- ther price cuts were made, fared only indifferently. Cumulative signs that mergers of the various interests in the steel and iron trade are assuming definite form accelerated the demand for stocks of thut character. It may not have ac- counted, however, for the extraordi- nary gyrations of gulf states and Re- plogle steels. Very much the same reagons ap- plied with equal force to the strength of shares of sugar, copper and other companies, which 'rumor or gossip credited with similar plans to meet the new era of reconstruction and re- Mean- 1 55 ustment. Protessio Suspected. Observers of the week's business were of the opinion that an over- whelming proportion of the trading emanated from professional sources. The active participation of commis- d | sion houses with important middle western centers was indication, how- ever, of a moderate revival of pub- lic interest. Apart from a recurrence of the 6 per cent rate for call money, due mainly to the reduction of local re- serves by out-of-town banks, the money market retained much of its recent ease on more liberal offerings of time funds. Some short-time ag- commodations were made on the un- usually low basis of 41 per cent, with liberty bonds as collateral. Confidence in Investments. Continued confidence marked the investment situation, new corporate offerings, including the Southern rail- way $30.000,000 bond issue, as well as numerous state and municipal under- writings, meeting with ready sale. There was also a good inquiry for many of the old line or pre-war rail- way bonds. The one disquieting note of the week was sounded in the market for for- eign exchanges. London and Paris advances plainly expressed the con- cern manifested in Pittsburgh finan- cial quarters at the latest shift in Anglo-French affairs. GRAIN AND PROVISIONS. CHICAGO, January 21.—Shorts were driven to cover on the board of trade today, improved commission house de- mand’ for wheat making for a steady advance in that cereal which caused the rest of the list to strengthen in sympathy. ~ Wheat registered net gains of 1% to 1%;: corn was up %; oats were % to 34 higher, and pro- visions gained from 1213 to 20 points, although January pork finished 50 points up. The wheat pit was quiescent in the early trading. Local traders were in- clined to be bearish, but did not act on their convictions to any great ex- tent. When the buying started the surplus in the pit was readily ab- sorbed. News developments were mixed, ex- port demand continuing slow, but the wgather map showing that western Kansas received little or no moisture overnight. One authority pointed out that Liverpool remained strong de- spite large Argentine and Australian shipments. Corn_was influenced by wheat, but when the cash markets failed to re- horns siow sale at 19 and 20. The duck market is steady, with desirable stock wanted at 28 to 30, but poor stock is neglected at 23 and 24. Geese are dull at 18 to 26. with Kent Islands bringing top prices. Pigeons and guinea fowl in ample supply at 30 to 5 a pair for the former and 25 to 60 each for the latter. The warm weather prevailing has caused a drop in the demand for dressed poultry of all kinds and with receipts of most lines ample the mar- ket rules easy, prices ranging no higher than live stock except for extra choice to fancy dressed, and capons, the latter being in good de- mand at 40 to 42 a pound for large, 7 pounds and over, and 30 to 35 for medium, 5 to 6 pounds. Oats exhibited some strength that was all its own and was helped by some switching of corn holdings to the oats pit.
