Emiliano Chamorso- Visit of French Mission Social Event of the Week: Clubs and Picnics Popular Midsummer Program particular]y Varied and Well Adapted to the Season—Lock Tavern Be- coming Favorite Resort With Coolidges. HE midsummer program of society in the capital, or that part of it kept here by stress of affairs, official or otherwise, was par- ticularly varied and pleasant last week and especially well adapted to the season. The most important event was the all-too-short visit of Marshal i Fayolle with the members of the French mission to Canada, now en route ! home, who remained only one day. ery moment of that, however, was filled. beginning at midday, with a large luncheon party at the French embassy, given by the ambassador and Mme. Jusserand, when the guests included not only the members of the mission. which numbers twenty- five, including the wives of several members, but the staff of the embassy as well. Later the same afternoon the distinguished itors were re- ceived by the President and Mrs. Harding, the reception taking place in the blue room at the White House, which was decorated with quan- tities of flowers for the occasion. The French ambassador presented Marshal Fayolle, who, in turn, presented the members of the mission to the President and Mrs. Hafd- ing, and after the formal part was over the party broke up into gay little groups, some to chat, while others enjoyed their first glimpse of the interior of the White House and the view of the gardens outside. HE following day the President received the new minister of Nica- ragua, Gen. Emiliano Chamorro, former President of Nicaragua, who went to the White House, accompanied by the members of the staff of the legation, to present his credentials. The minister, with Senora Chamorro, and their niece, Senorita Adela Enriquez, who accompanied them to Washington, arrived several weeks ago, and are established at Wardman Park Hotel. Another diplomat who arrived during the past week and who will likewise present his credentials at an early date, is Senor Don Adolpho Ballivian, new minister of Bolivia, who came from London, where has been representing his country at the Court of St. James. He will be joined here later in the season by Senora de Ballivian, who remained on in England. Senor Ballivian is a cousin of Senor Don Manuel Balli- vian, who married Miss Calderon, daughter of the former minister of Bolivia, Senor Don Ignacio Calderon. have no fault te of honor at two HE Vice President and Mrs. Coolidge, who seem to find with the Washington climate, were the guests interesting dinner parties last week. The first, given Monday by Mr. and Mrs. Edward Beale McLean, at Friendship, their beautiful subur- ban home, proved to be an altogether delightful affair, for which this spacious house, with its broad verandas and beautifully wooded lawns, made an ideal setting. The event not only celebrated Independence day, but the birthday anniversary of Mr. Coolidge. The second dinner party, at which Mr. Robert Woods Bliss, the third assistant secretary of state, was the host, and which took place Wednesday evening. in his apartment at 1785 Massachusetts avenue, was attended by the Secretary of the Navy and Mrs. Denby and a small group of other iriends of the host, who, with his charming wife, now mn_Europe, is reckoned among the most accomplished hosts in the official circle. N ANY departures marked the week, and those who linger, either through necessity or choice, are leading a rather simple life, with frequent parties of a more or less informal nature at the country clubs or on the hotel roof gardens. with now and then an al-fresco picnic along the banks of the upper Potomac or in Rock Creek Park. The exclusive Lock Tavern Club is proving very alluring to its fashionable membership, and it appears that it is fast becoming a favorite resort with the Vice President and Mrs. Coolidge, who have motored out several times for luncheon or dinner. The club has a picturesque setting overlooking the rocky gorge which forms the falls, and it is also of considerable historic interest as well. Mrs. Cromwell Brooks is a frequent hostess there, and Count de Salis of the British embassy, Mrs. Charles Denby and other prominent folks in society are among those who entertained there last week.
